the router is so that you can connect two or more computers online at the same time and to provide a hardware firewall .it did not effect my speed at all with one or two computer on at the same time
the router goes between the modem and the pc via an ethernet cable

probably one of the most common routers is the Linksys BEFSR41 .. pretty cheap and very easy to get support on around here if needed
All routers are always on (assuming you don't unplug it!
Dont forget you need a modem AND a router.. they're two pieces of equipment.
Modem = Required
Router = Suggested, allows you to connect multiple machines to the internet connection and provides a level of security.. not strong security but MUCH better than just having your PC out there in the open

Routers 101:stickside: 'Whoever told you that routers are really slow, has absolutely no idea what they're talking about. A router is not slow. In fact, it may actually increase your speeds(slightly, not dramatically). Basically what it does is keep your connection live 24/7. So, even when you turn off your computer, your router is still always online, so as soon as you power up your computer, it's automatically online without having to click on any WinPoet crap. This eliminates the WinPoet software that you're using now. Also, Wi..' [ more]
Re: Routers 101:XLSoulja: 'actually i don't connect using WInPoet, i just dial in regulary. and if it increases the speed, how much would u say. cause my speeds are solid at 742k/136k. and also i called verizon and they said they only handle LinkSys Routers.. and i wanna know a good Router, atleast cheap cause i don't have alot of money'
sd70mac666: 'I connect with a router and it's no sweat setting it up. All you do is enter your user id and password at the prompt. This computer is on 24/7 and nothing happens. I'm still on. Even if you only have one computer get a router |

BestBuy had a Netgear 4port router-switch on sale for $60 today. $40 MIR, which brings it down to $20. I think the deal's ended though. I picked one up today, along with a Motorola cable modem, since I heard Motorola makes some of the best. |
