sorry guys, i could have sworn that i had replied. but i'll do it again.
I tried reinstalling everything on both computers. I don't think it is the computer, i think it is the residential gateway. Is that what you mean by start all over?
Thanks, and sorry about the late reply.

I think your problem is still an incorrect IP setting. Since you have two devices that want to assign IPs, do NAT, and be a gateway (all by default)...you will have trouble until noe has those features turned off. In your case, it should be the RG. By PING testing, we can determine what is functioning correctly and what needs fixed.
Since we are back to square one... what are the IP addresses of the devices in your LAN?
broadband router LAN IP:
cabled_PC:
Wireless_PC:
Residential_Gateway:
What are the ping results?
cabled_PC to broadband router LAN IP?
cabled_PC to Internet IP 66.54.32.221 ?
cabled_PC to Internet IP www.usatoday.com ?
wireless_PC to broadband router LAN IP?
wireless_PC to Internet IP 66.54.32.221 ?
wireless_PC to Internet IP www.usatoday.com ? |

ok, this is weird, the desktop works on the router if the laptop is connected with a wire, but as soon as the wireless residential gateway is hooked up, the desktop also does not work.
broadband router LAN IP: not sure about this?...would this be the 192.168.1.1
cabled_PC: 192.168.1.3
Wireless_PC: 192.168.1.100
Residential_Gateway: not sure?
when both are connected with wired cable, they both work. But when the wireless residential gateway is connected, neither works. They both will ping the router but that is all. Does that give you any info? How can i know what the residential gateway's ip is?
Thanks

Because the wireless_PC still has a .100 address I think the RG is still doing DHCP, DNS, and NAT. Unless you assigned it's IP statically...then you should change it back to DCHP Obtained for the testing.
Your broadband router LAN IP should be 192.168.1.1.
I also wonder if your RG has an IP of 192.168.1.1. If so, this is another problem. I though the default should be 10.0.1.1 though.
I think you can check it by your RG software on the laptop.
Please confirm that the following has been done because we really should disable these features on the RG... Quote:
How should I install the RG-1000 in combination with an Intelligent Cable modem, ISDN or DSL Router, that supports DHCP & NAT features.
This situation is similar to connecting to a LAN infrastructure providing internet and DHCP functionality. The LAN infrastructure setting needs to be selected in the RG setup sofware.

Another bit on info would help too. On the Wireless_PC, run WINIPCFG and tell me what the DHCP sever IP address and default gateway address is.

when i try to run the rg setup utility, it does not find a rg so i cannot change anything through that. So i cannot do anything with that until i can get the laptop to find the rg.
I tried typing winipcfg and it says that there is nothing like that. I'm running win xp, is that maybe a win 98 file??? Thanks

yes it is an Win9x tool...sorry
In XP open a command prompt and the run ipconfig /all to get that information.
Since you can't access the RG you may need to change your IP address manually (at least temporarily).
In the Wireless_PC, assign yourself an IP address of 10.0.1.2 with a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0
Then try to access the RG settings. |
