| HUGE Problem. Need a little help??
ok, i had my network going so i could get internet on my wired desktop and my wireless laptop. i wanted to share files as well, and i almost had it, when all of a sudden, i couldn't get internet, files, printer...nothing. on both computers. Now, i just wanna get it back to where i can get internet, and i will not worry about files and printer sharing anymore. I formatted the laptop, and put a fresh win xp, now, when i try to connect it still will not work. right now, i'm on my desktop and i put a different hard drive in with windows 98 on it, and that works, except when i connect the router. When i use the router, there is no internet. Has this happened to anyone before? i would have thought that the fresh install would have fixed it and allowed me to go back to what i was doing, but it still does not work. Is it the router? is it maybe the lucent technologies residential gateway? Please help if you can. i would really appreciate it.
Thanks

| Great, was it a result of something posted in your last thread? Please post what helped in your other thread for others to use as a reference. Quote: |

| Was it after a reboot of something?
How about ping tests? Can everything on the LAN ping each other including pinging the router's LAN IP? If yes, can you ping a an Internet IP address? If yes, can you ping an Internet HOST name? |

well, i had always got the internet part of it going. I wanted to have them share files, and somewhere along the road, it stopped working too. The cable works only on the desktop which i put a new hard drive in to see if it would work. The laptop still does not work after a clean install. The windows 98 machine does not work when a router is used. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what's wrong, but here are some questions that might yield a clue.
Have you got all of your protocols loaded and binded to the correct cards?
Have you got windows XP setup with a lan connection?
Have you got your desktop's internet connection shared properly?
Can you ping between machines?
Are your cables all plugged in? do they all have link lights?
if you have any hubs, switches, routers are they plugged in correctly?
--thats all i can think of at the moment (gotta go back to work)
I'll check back later if i can think of anything else that might help.
good luck! |

a little update. I can now connect directly from the cable modem to the laptop, without the wireless, and also without the router, so my guess is it's one of those things.
so, i can connect the laptop wired to the cable modem, and i can connect the desktop to the cable modem wired. I can not connect the wireless to the laptop. It says it is working, but nothing comes up.
I have school today, but will continue to work on it tonight, thanks for all your help so far guys

kruseman, please try to answer some our questions when you get back...that way we can provide some better help.
Especially the ping test questions I posted earlier. |

ok, sorry about that. I'm not really sure how to ping the computers, cause i don't know their ip addresses, they are set to obtain one automatically, but the one good thing is, i came home, and all of a sudden the internet is working and hooked in the router on the desktop. i'm still gonna need to test the wireless laptop, but if that works, that will be great. Can you explain how to test ping exactly? like how can i find out what ip each computer is, even when it's on automatic. Well, going to check the laptop, be back with an update.

sure... one way to determine the IP address of your computer is:
Win9x: run WINIPCFG
NT/2K/XP: open a Command prompt, then IPCONFIG
After you have the IP addresses... at the command prompt type PING 192.168.1.1 (substitute 192.168.1.1 with the other computer/device's IP address). You should get something like Reply from... meaning it was successful or a Request timed out meaning it wasn't successful.
If you can successfully PING and get a reply (even if just one way) then the basic cabling and IP addressing is correct.
If you can only get a reply from computerA pinging computerB but not computerB pinging computerA the basics are still okay but there may be a firewall or filtering problem. |

ok, i think we are getting closer here. I have the laptop connected to the router without the wireless thing. so in other words, i have a wired connection and it all works. They can ping each other and stuff. But the only problem is, that i need the wireless connection for the laptop. Should i connect that and see if it pings? Any ideas? I'm feeling a little better right now that the internet actually will work, now all i need is for the wireless part to work. Any suggestions would be great
