I have both enabled on my router, but I know many places don't, now where I live I don't have to worry about it a whole lot cause I live in the middle of nowhere, but I know of several individuals who don't have broadband who drive around searching for open access points to do windows updates...

As I understood it, he chose a reasonable difficult WEP key (except that it wasn't very long) which is concatenated with the IV (Initialization Vector). Thus even with a different key, the weakness is present due to the concatenation with IV. In theory, a firmware upgrade may be able to limit the values used in IV to those which keep a more secure key after concatenation. I think some recent Lucent/Agere/Orinoco products have this type of firmware ugrade. I also think the AirPort cards are actually a Lucent/Agere/Orinoco type product inside anyway, so it may be out for some of them too.

Hard to imagine all the open unprotected networks in big cities like NY or Chicago etc.

    War driving, war chalking.

Hmm, what would you call it when a dude with a p133 laptop is standing by the road with a sign that says "will disclose access points for food"?? lol.

    Hey everyone,
Yeah, you should see Philly! I dont do much war driving considering i do not have a lap top but i have "programs" thats scan wireless networks around my area. Just in my neihborhood, within .5 miles, there at 13 WAPs!!! No, i do not sniff packets :P hahahahaha That and the fact that everyone is diverting from ad hoc, its scary what the world will be when everyone, or most ocnvert to the wireless age I also did hear about WPA. I hear they were also extending WEP, but calling it WPA, an extension. i heard WPA is susposed to have 256 bit encryption!!!! If so, god bless the hackers that break that son of a gun :-P Well that is tall for now, ttyl everyone

BTW, Mickwish, IPCop isnt friendly with Wireless, so if your going to try and run a wireless configged Linux network, Good Luck mate

    Cheers,
    Dan

IPCop will be wireless friendly from the next revision, they say.

Will have a "BLUE" adapter for wireless connections!!

ATM I am running wireless off my LAN ("GREEN" adapter) - not particularly secure, but I didn't want to run it off my DMZ as I would have no connectivity with my LAN them.

I didn't bother hacking IPCop to add a wireless adapter - at least in it's secure form I can keep hackers our from the net. Pity about the wireless ATM, though. Just have to change my WEP daily I suppose, to make it harder for them.

    Cheers
    Mick

    Mick bud,
Wait for the new IPCop, i did a lil research and they are susposed to have everything set for wireless. Also, you might want to try, if you run Linux, to run Debian, it has a new form of Wireless compatability. I have found it much usefull at my home when i run rigorous configurations remotely. Gotta love wireless!!! BTW, WPA is not scheduled to be released in SP2!!! ITs all good, but Mick ma man, hacking IPcop wouldnt exactly be the best thing to do if you expect to keep hackers out, causei mean if you can hack ipcop, anyone can ey :P hahahahaha, IPCop has soem good spots and some bad spots, jsut dont intend on running proxy through it, sooo many flaws hahahaha, just ask ma IT gusy at ma tech shcool :P hahahaha. All good ey,

    Cheers,
    Dan

For those of you who don't wanna try to make your own WEP keys.. You can have one generated for you here...

bloody hell I HATE THESE WIRELESS WITH FIREWALLS WHICH WON'T LET YOU DISABLE. And they always make my games in warcraft lag really bad once every 3 times. I only use wireless when i am forced too and change back to classic. god wireless shouldn't even exist then maybe mom could just but a 20 meter cable and make holes in the house RATHER for me to waste 10 extra minutes every single day and wasting finger tapping on the table

You probably don't have firewall problems, just NAT issues. If you want, start another thread and someone will show you how to set up port forwarding on your router. I use it for BitTorrent because otherwise it doesn't work very well.

First, learn how to speak, or at least write with some clarity and correct grammar and spelling. Next, ask for some help. Wireless is fine for most situations if you have realistic expectations. It is certainly NOT a problem as a technology in a general sense. Sounds like you may have some hardware issues or perhaps some simple configuration issues. Worst case you may have interference problems.

I'm setting up a WISP and was curious about what Linux offered in this area. Seems there are tools included in post 2.4 kernels that are pretty impressive. This link shows some possibilities for filtering and bandwidth management...
