| DSL Router/Modem Question
Greetings. I currently receive DSL service and distribute the access across a small home network connected to about four computers. The DSL line plugs-in to an Efficient Speedstream 5660 Modem/Router, which then plugs into a small Netgear switch to distribute access throughout the house. The modem/router in use is the one provided by my ISP.
But, I have been considering adding a firewall and/or a new and more advanced router to my setup in place of the Efficient, provided by the ISP. But, what I am wondering, is if it is possible to 'shut-down' the routing features on the Efficient so that it can act just as a dumb modem to allow the new router and/or firewall to act as they should. I know that in Router mode, it acts as a small firewall using a kind of NAT.
I've noticed on the Efficient's web interface that there are two modes it can run in: Bridged and Router, but it does not explain the difference between the two. Right now it is in 'router' mode, but is bridged mode what I have in mind or something else entirely?
Thanks in advance for any help/advice you can provide |
