| Linksys Router and Internet?
I recently set up a wired home network between two computers (ME & 98) using a Linksys BEFSR41 router. The network works great. I can communicate between both computers both ways. The other day I had RoadRunner installed and connected the cable modem through the WAN port on the router. I can receive the internet on the ME machine but cannot from the 98 machine. I can ping to the router and the ME machine from the 98 machine but cannot get into the Setup from the 98 machine (I can from the ME machine). The 98 machine cannot see the internet. I've been trying to figure this out for 3 days now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

several ways to check it out.
go to run box and type in "winipcfg" ...then there is a drop down menu box and you need to find your nic in that menu box.....then when it comes up click on "more info"
tell us what it says

GroundZero3 should be able to help you out alot here.
Can the 98se machine do everything over the network, share files etc, except connect to the internet? How do you have the 98se network settings configured? Since you said u can ping it, I'm assuming its getting an IP from the router... |

I'm assuming that you want the information on the 98 machine. Is there any particular information you need instead of me having to type everything in?
VHockey86
I have the standard network configuration going on the 98 machine. I'm obtaining a IP address automatically, WINS Resolution disabled, no Gateways, DNS disabled, binding to Clients for Microsoft Network and Microsoft Family Logon. Anything else you need to know?
Thanks to both for your responses. |

well, what does it give for IP adress for starters??
If its 169.254 blah blah then it isnt getting an addy from the router.
Or in short..just try, from winipcfg...."release all" and then "renew all"...or make sure your nic shows up in the drop menu box and then click 'release" and then "renew".
maybe give it a sec in between...give it a few secs to release etc.

or also right click "network neighborhood" click "properties" and tell us what all you have in there.
or maybe you could try just deleting everything from network properties and reinstall it....cleint for msoft networks, tcpip etc etc.

IP address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
Nothing under primary or secondary WINS server
This information is off the 98 machine. I tried the release and renew as suggested. I made an attempt to get online but still got the standard Microsoft "This Page cannot be displayed" Error. |

okay so you are getting a router ip address which is a good thing.
load up i.e press stop. then go to tools, internet options, click connections, click lan settings and make sure none of those options are checked
also can you access the router from the win98 box? |

Ive never had that particular model so im not positive on the IP (mine are always 192.168.1.100+). Rest I can assure is good tho.
Goto the internet options in the control panel and goto the connections tab. You should see a button for LAN Settings. Then I think there are 2 checkboxes, both of which should be unchecked. Hopefully im not talking out of my ass here, been so long since ive used 98se.
---edit---
ops, beat me to it

GroundZero3
I can ping the routers address and I get a good response, but that is the only thing I can do router wise on the 98 box. Like I mentioned earlier, the LAN nework works great, just no internet on the 98 box.
For clarity here, I'm only using 2 NIC cards, one per machine with a direct connection from the Cable modem to the router via the WAN port.
VHockey86 & GroundZero3
I have checked the Connections tab on the Internet Properties and none of the 3 boxes are checked.
