Wireless Router Question
Ok I am building my new comp and I want internet in my room but I don't really want to run a LAN cable down there so here is my question. My friend told me to go with a wireless router. My question is will it like go through walls and stuff like our office is almost right above my room...well a little to the right......but anyway if I get a wireless ethernet card will I be able to get internet in my room with good reception or is it even possible to go through walls like that??
Also will anything like turning on wireless devices like cell phones interupt the connection??Last edited by MitaDC; September 16th, 2003 at 06:39 PM.

The only thing I've heard, and noticed, about wireless routers is that they work a lot better if the computer you're on is on the same plane as the router. IE they lose power faster as they travel up or down through a house. That could be some bunk someone fed me, but I figured I'd throw it out so someone more knowledgable could dispel the myth, if it is a myth.
Otherwise, wireless will go through walls no problem (assuming they aren't filled with lead or some other radiation blocking agent). They have trouble with radon detectors though for some reason.
Using my cell phone has never affected the operation of my wireless card. Different frequencies, etc.

Wireless in the house typically works really well (unless you are trying to go through 2-3 floors and walls). I use a BEFW11S4 from linksys and it works great with my sisters D-link wireless PC Card from anywhere in the house.
As for interference... cell phones not really. If you use 802.11b wireless, which operates at 2.4ghz you *might* have a few problems if you also use 2.4ghz cordless phones. Havent had a problem w/ it in my house thoLast edited by VHockey86; September 16th, 2003 at 07:17 PM.

linksys cross the board. just got back from installing a wireless network in 3 girls' apartment. 30 feet is the approx distance from the router, and take off about 3 feet for every instance of a wall. that is what i say anyway. depends on the walls

That is what I thought so I have to get one that goes in your PCI slot or like an external USB one??

A PCI one is your best bet, IMO. But I inherently distrust data xfer mobile USB peripherals.
