Cisco 3550 Switch

Hey,

i have 3 new cisco 3550 24port switches. i rebuilding a test lab that will not be connected to the internet. the current network has 6 different networks in it. each network has onlny a couple of clients or servers. most of the equipment (routers, hubs)i have belong to other depts. except for my new switches. since they are layer 3 switches or switches with routing capabilites can i set up the same type of network with just switches, using a vlan or some other setup, or must i still purchase a router or routers. i not sure the exact capabilities of these 3350 switches.

help - j29net

static IPs?

are you trying to have it just these computers in a LAN and no internet, and no commucation to computers outside of the LAN? if so, you dont need a router.

Yes, they will be static ip's, with no connection to the outside .. this is a test lan lab environment. would i just plug them into a switch, and the gateway doesnt matter, or can i have selected ports be a part of a vlan, and one port in each vlan be the gateway and be connected to the other switches

If you have more than one vlan you will need one of the switches to use its routing functionality (the EMI IOS Image) to route between your vlans. If you dont want to do this, just use a single vlan with a /24 mask this will give you 254 address which gives you more than enough for your 72 ports.

Defualt gateway will be the ip address you assign to each vlan.

Yeah it will be more than one vlan...6 to be exact and the switches do have the EMI image...but is that automatic or is there a command to start that process...

If they have the image you just need to enable routing:

en > conf t > ip routing

it should now let you assign IP addresses to ports (as interfaces).
