| Wierd problem concerning XP File sharing..
Here's the deal... I have a Linksys W11S4 v4. I'm trying to get file and print sharing to work between 2 computers. 1 is wireless and the other is direct. I don't have firewalls (got rid of them to eliminate any trace of blockage) Both are using XP Pro. I created a network disc and set it up just as you would normally.
PC1
I can axx Mshome (the net I created) and I can see PC2 but I can't axx it. gives an error "... not accessible. You might not have permission etc etc."
PC2
I can only see PC2, but can't see PC1 let alone axx it.
basically File sharing is FUBAR so far.
I've read alot of the comments thus far concerning this and tried a bunch of them.. please give me ur advice..
Cyd
PS
don't even bother asking Linksys for help, they're script readers. |

here are some basics, from memory, so take it for what it's worth.
Use the network connection wizard to help you through it.
1) All network comps must have the same WORKGROUP NAME, and for God's sake, not the default of MS HOME. (Easy target for hackers). Name the workgroup something unique.
2) Enalble file sharing on each comp, in the properties. Again, use the help and support tutorial.
3) Share at least one folder, such as shared music, on each comp.
Right click the folder, highlight sharing and security, and enable file sharing for that file.
You should then be able to "see" the comps on the network, and the "folders" you have permission to access.
4) you may need to install the printer (drivers) on each comp, then connect it to the router, and have each comp find the printer.
Hope this helps. |

To add to DallasDon's list...
5) Make sure you create the exact same user accounts (same username and same password) on the pcs to be shared.
6) Make sure upon booting up the user is prompted for username/password (i.e. MS Client for Networks logon)
7) You also have to assign a name for the printer, and share the printer under that name.
Also, the workgroup name and the computer's names must not have any spaces in them (e.g., "Cydios' pc" is not a valid computer name for your network's purposes)

| Problem configuring intranet: wired and wireless
I have the same problem as described in the first post of this thread:
My home intranet is composed by:
-1 USRobotics 22 Mbps Wireless Cable/DSL Router (USR8022);
-1 PC (windows XP pro) wired to the router;
-1 portable PC (windows XP pro) wireless with a USRobotics 22 Mbps Wireless PC Card (USR2210).
With the portable PC all is ok except I canīt see the desktop computer.
Strange Stuff (that I hope will help someone who may have the same problems):
-if the desktop computerīs XP firewall is activated, it can't even see itself - EVEN TIMES OUT WHEN I PING IT'S OWN NIC;
-when I put a fixed IP address on the desktop PC I can see this computer on the portable PC but when I click it, it tells me that I don't have permission to access the computer and to consult the adminstrator which happpens to be me (both computers have the same user with the same password and administrator privileges);
-In the XP installation before I formatted and reinstalled (this weekend) I had Norton Internet security installed and if it's firewall was activated and even if the ip addresses were defined not to block these Norton would block them anyways.
Some conclusions:
-On the desktop PC I have another partition with windows 98 (where I do some troubleshooting, when necessary) and I am able to configure completely the intranet (everyone see's everybody and all can be shared) which tells me that all my hardware is ok (I guess?!?!).
On the desktop I have tried alot of things (before I formatted and reinstalled this weekend). Now I have a fresh copy to start from.
Status:
-I still can't reach the router from the desktop PC (which means I can't reach the router's configuration page-I can reach this page through the portable PC);
-the IP address of the desktop PC is not distributed by the router even if I have the DHCP activated (the ip address is nothing in the range of the router and the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 when it should be 255.255.255.0);
-I forced the default gateway to 192.168.123.254 but didn't solve anything (on the portable computer I think this wasn't necessary and happened automatically-I try not to touch the portable computer's network properties much not to disturb it's "good functionality")
-I can't renew the IP address.
-Yesturday I forced NETBIOS over TCP/IP like was suggested but did not solve the problem;
-did not enabled LMHOSTs lookup yet ( doing one thing at a time and didn't have the time, today I will try this, and hope this does the trick).
When I try this last option I will let you know.
I hope my description/troubleshooting helps any lost sole.

By default LMHOSTs lookup was already enabled, so there goes that trial.
Anyone has any other idea on what I can try?
Thanx in advance |

I think things are getting complicated!
I use a Belkin 54g wireless, Router connected to B/band modem connected to desktop Pc (did this first), ran software and set-up fine. Installed software on laptop and then connected PCMCIA wireless network card. Then ran Network wizard on desktop Pc, all good, then ran Network wizard on laptop. Selected all files I wanted to share on both Pc's ( printer was shared automatically ). Have had no problems, have not had to adjust any settings, all of it was done by software/windows. Sometimes things seem harder than they are..... |

EUREKA!!!!!
Yesterday I updated my ethernet card's (basic 3com 10/100 Mbps NIC) drives and all started working fine.
What threw me off was that my system is all (I consider old and way) before the OS. Guessed that windows XP pro would already have good/updated drives, on the CD, for this hardware.
Configuration now of TCP/IP are all Default/automatic/DHCP.
Next step is configuring the router/system to dial up/hang up accordingly, since I am having some problems with that now.
The router keeps on telling the modem to redial even if I tell it to hang up.
One option would be to share the internet connection through the desktop computer but I would prefer to explor the potentials of the router.
