you need a crossover cable....the cable you have is probably just a regular cable..a crossover cable has some of the wires switched over...if you are just going from NIC to NIC..without a hub etc..you need a crossover cable.

Regardless of any IP settings, your NIC should still receive packets that are sent out on the wire (it will just ignore those that aren't meant for it). I still suggest trying a different cable. Btw, if you used the wrong cable type (like patch vs. crossover) neither computer would show any packets being received. |

If he's not using a router, then one of his pc's will have to have two nics in it. One nic will act as the gateway and get assigned the public ip from his ISP the other will have a private ip. This nic connects to the other pc's nic. Set both of these to static ip's. This way XP won't be able to autoassign that 169 ip. If it still doesn't work like this then something else it wrong. But start here. | Hi
your approach seems very probably to me, as i have a similar problem
have two NIC
an external one and one onboard
i have always used the external one. but recently i switched to see if i can get Wake on link to work
but it didnt work.
anyway. so i continued to use my onboard NIC.
before. people can connect to my PC in games, with Remote administrator, with seti@home and also of stuff
now cant@@
so i plug the cable back to my external NIC.
but now it wont work!
it wont renew my IP. !
i guess ur approach would suit mine.
but i dont know how to set it to static ips |
