Internet connection

My internet explorer went down last week. Problem is that explorer comes up and the address bar shows it trying to connect but no success but is caught in some kind of loop. Address bar keeps flashing back and forth between finding site and connecting but that's all. Nothing comes up and I cnnot even try another site from my favorites folder. This is very frustrating. Email and yahoo messenger work fine. I use XP and have installed IE6 spk1 and changed my start page in regedit. I'm told that XP ftp has a bug and the only to remedy is to reformat hard drive. There has to be another avenue to try.

can you use a peer to peer or instant messenger program or similar to confirm you are CONNECTING to the net. if you are, then try a repair installation of ie from the control panel software uninstall tab.
