I have a smc wireless barricade and charter pipeline cable internet
I run a dell inspiron 8100 laptop wirelessly running XP pro, and a mac running OSX via ethernet cable.
my problem is that my net connection will run fine for a few hours but then just stop. When I reboot the router it seems to fix it self for a few more hours but then the same problem again.
Ive tryed reseting the modem and the router with on sucsess.
the router is configured to reset with the lease time and is dymanic. |

When it stops can you still get a leased address from the router? When it stops try issuing the following commands in a Windows XP command line:
ipconfig /release
then:
ipconfig /renew
This will release the IP address from the router and then it will ask the router for a new address.
If you get a new address can you browse the network, ie. Can you ping each computer? If you can the internal network is probably still working but it may be something with the router.
If the network seems to be working try renewing the address the router has on its WAN port. See if that fixes the problems.

I'm not too sure about Windows XP but if you go to "Run" in the start menu and type command you should get a command window.
When you released the IP did the router issue a new one to the desktop? If it did go into the command window and try to ping the Mac box with the following:
ping <IP of MAC box>
See if you get a response. |

You need the actual IP address of the Macintosh computer. Go here to find out how to get it: http://www.uark.edu/compserv/network...ipaddress.html
Now take that address (for example 192.168.1.101) and ping the Macintosh box from the Windows command line:
ping 192.168.1.101
You should see a response from the Macintosh computer. If you do the internal (LAN) network is functioning.
Can you access the configuration of the SMC Router from a web browser? |

I Used to Install for HSA (Charters cable modem provider) and they had a DHCP problem that was never resolved that required either a release /renew of the ip if it was directly connected to the pc or if it was a router it had to be rebooted. THey always said it was a system problem but every router and computer I or the other installers delt with had this problem. |
