Cool
wireless G security

i have a wrt54g linksys router and one wireless desktop pc with a linksys card. i enabled 128 bit WEP. i also have the option on my router setup screen to use WPA which from what i understand is more secure. i dont think WPA can be configured on my wireless card,or at least i cant find where, just WEP. I have just the 2 pc's on the netowrk using windows xp home and a cable modem. do i need something else to use WPA? driver update for the card or something? or something else? is WEP fine for my network--only 2 PC's, not really any super sensitive data or anything. I just figure i should use WPA if it is more secure but what do I have to do to use it?

goto WEP, generate a key, then write it down. Hit apply. Now on your wireless computer, install the card and the little wireless internet settings should come up, right click and goto properties on the connection. Now it should give you a list of possible networks, select one (by default its linksys, but you sohuld probably change this on the router at some point). Goto advanced and then there is an option for a key-code i believe it says. Enter it into there and you should be good to go.

Another thing you might want to do is disable SSID broadcast, and then change the name of the server (you'll have to manually enter the name of the server in your wireless proerpties in order to get it to find the connection after this.

---edit---

Just realized u werent having troulbe with WEP lol. Guess the little tutorial was kind of worthless.
Ne ways, I'd say WEP would definatley be fine.

what wireless card do you have?

if its a B card some manufactures are releasing firmware updates for WPA. but not all

Winxp has released a patch for WPA, might want to give that a whirl.

as for secuirty about 99.9% of people who see a wireless network have WEP they pass right by it unless you have something they seriously want. Enable mac filtering, Disable SSID and limit how many ip addresses your router gives out and you will have a pretty secure set up for a wireless home network

also i suggest to update to the newest firmware for the router, the new slick cisco interface rocks

i have a linksys G wireless card. when i configure the card, the place to enter a key is under a WEP area and there is no WPA listed. so would i have to download some firmware or anything or would the XP fix do the job or both? do i download the fix just on the wireless PC? i heard WEP slows down the network, does WPA also slow it down, or does it slow it down more or less?
