Yeah, I'm impressed by the lack of downtime I've had since switching WKS04 over to has been offline only three times: once was due to it not being able to cope with the same OC as I had running in W7 (yet, even at 'only' 3.6 [instead of 3.8] my TPF has dropped by over 2 mins on 6900 bigadv WUs) and it had hung; once was for the installation of something that was major, that needed certain things to be running from startup; and the third time was a PICNIC issue...where I pulled the wrong plug out of the wall I had even gone through the cabling to work out which plug to pull, but (a few mins later, when I was ready to change the plugs over) I forgot to double-check and pulled the one that powered the extension strip that the PC runs off..instead of the shredder's power cable...

Cool, I'll probably have to ask about it again, once I do find one.

But your right about the updates, I've had it at times take almost 10 minutes shutting down, installing updates.

Supposedly when Win7 was being tested and developed this was one of the things that was so supposed to be elimnated, or at least drastically reduced, the damn shut down and reboot procedure for updates. In this day and age, I really don't know why the OS can't just reinitialize while still running with out having to reboot the whole damn PC.

half the time, when you go to install some dinky little app, the whole damn desktop refreshes for one stupid Icon, sometimes it does it with out any icon additions, why can't the OS do something similar when updates need to be installed?

    Just boggles the mind sometimes.

Yeah, you don't want to have *almost* enough time for a graceful shutdown...especially if your OS decides it wants to attempt to install updates on the way off...

    shutdown -s -f -t 3
That should do you for a command (if you're running a M$ OS) to force it to shut down, with a delay of 3 seconds, in case your UPS doesn't have software for you to use... :thumb:

In other news, my new WD Black Series 750GB came today...

Of course in the usual Newegg Specially packed Box...

Which translates into about 10 miles of brown packing paper, with 9/10ths of it crammed on the top, and 1/10th of it under the item.

Luckily WD has their drives packaged in SOME sort of shock absorbing plastic molds at both end of the HD, in their own brown box, so it wasn't just a drive in anti static bag in box like I have gotten in past (last drive from Amazon or Newegg I forget which, was the WD Green Series, 1.5TB drive, that was I think Amazon, but was in a similar box, but the OEM box was wrapped in Bubble Wrap inside of packing peanuts in the main box)

anyways, hoping the drive works, as I took video of me opening the box and showing how it was packed in case it becomes an issue if the drive is DOA.

So now I have most of what I need to do my Partial system upgrade, and just maybe pick up the new 560 Ti or a 2nd 470 in a week or so.

I'm thinking I really should get around to getting a new UPS for the main rig at least, as the Surge Suppressor I have now is a bit old, at least 5 -7 years now, so should really replace that.

but need to use the P3 Kill-a-watt meter and see what this system is pulling from the wall as is right now, before figuring out what I need for a UPS. Figure something that provides at least 5 minutes of power to shut the whole thing down (usually only takes 30-60 seconds to shut the PC down, but sometimes you never know)

Um... I know this is the Folding@Home "Spam" thread, but...

    WTH are you talking about?

It was weird, as only a few seconds (well, I was on my POS BlackBerry, so it might have been longer - but certainly less than a couple of minutes) before that I'd been posting in the "Assosiations" thread........and it was where it normally was...

I'm not 100% that I would've noticed if I wasn't posting, or if I was posting from a computer (rather than the BlackBerry) but it is kinda too late to confirm either way...but I'm glad that someone else saw it too, so it wasn't the BlackBerry having a bit of a DERP moment...

Actually, just realised/remembered one of the things I prefer about the BlackBerry than the Desire that I was trying out (for around a month) other than that the BlackBerry has an actual keyboard, and I can use "autotext" [a combination of typo correction, and word shortcuts - meaning, for example that I only need to type 'bb' for it to be automagically changed to 'BlackBerry'..or 'nlmcouk' to get '', or 'nlm' to get 'Nude_Lewd_Man'...] is that the BlackBerry has a spell-checker built in, so I can check for spelling mistakes and typos before I submit my post.....

(That was 'whee' being changed to '[img][/im g]', but I've deliberately broken that code...)

yeah looks like the similar threads box is back down below again, even on my screen on the desktop.

Had you not said anything I wouldn't have even noticed it LOL.

Either my BlackBerry has changed the layout of the page or the TechIMO admins have...the "related threads" box is now above the post box, whereas it used to be at the bottom...

IIRC, Shy is/was the only person I had on FakeBonk as a contact...

Actually, thinking about it a bit more (and being reminded by that 'alternative' name for "FB") perhaps I did have another account on there..........from waaaaaay back when it first started... ....but you can't guess what I used to use FB for back in the day...
It might have been FB, or another similar site; it was back when the whole thing of 'social media' was breaking out...but there were too many kicking off at once, so I signed up with a load of them - and I'm sure if FB was around, it would've been one of those... That's where I got my nick from.. Fun times, very funny...

I could start mentioning some of the things I got up to back then, but it might get me a warning (it certainly would on it definitely is *NOT* fit for their "G" rating standard of post...) or ban or something; and IDK if any of you want to know................

I have mine still even though i am moving more toward G+, I cut my friends list down to a 1/10th of what it was originally keeping on the closest friends and family.

That sucks. I'm sure at some point they will let up on that BS, once it goes more public.

If its such a big deal for them, then maybe they should start censoring and cutting out all the Porn URL links that come up in regular Google Searches when people are doing searches for that stuff?
  • July 27th, 2011, 04:10 AM
Looks like G+ have decided to block me, and not give me any option to appeal (any more) as I now see this...

Sod it, I'm not gonna bother..

Nothing wrong with talking about emulators, those are legal, its the "ownership" of ROM's thats the issue.

Thats another thing I've been wondering about if they had any emulators on these devices.
So the controls can be setup with either with on screen in the corners or using they keypad of your phone. Not sure how that will work on a tablet to be honest. I tried to play some gameboy games that i own but have no idea in which box, totally legit for any mods trolling this, and it occasionally crashed or i had issues with the controls/gameplay. never got very far in them.

Yes! Rom Gripper, GameBoid, Snesoid, and DroidEmuROMGet for starters... there are free and paid versions of the apps, looks like the free one is fairly buggy though.

I thought they had 3 way capability?

huh... I guess not, just went through the list of all the cards on Newegg that might have 2 tabs per card, EVGA, MSI, ASUS, etc, and they all have 1 tab each.

Oh well, 3 way SLI probably wouldn't net me much more performance anyways, at 1920x1080, unless I grabbed a 2nd Display.

maybe I could grab a couple Single Slot GT 440's, OC & run F@H on them?

Grabbing more than 3 of any of the others would be a no no though, 200+ Watts per card times 3 cards would be 600+ of the 720W max on the +12V of my PSU, so, a no go.

they do have a GTX 470 for $160, which wouldn't be too bad though. Could grab that and be fine with my power consumption and a couple GT 430's or 440's, or even a single GTS 450 in the last slot, and leave 2nd to last open for some other PCIe card (TV tuner, or drive card)

Anyways we'll have to see how this pans out.

I saw they also have a GTX 480 for $220, which isn't bad either, and kind of toying with the idea of that... though finding a 2nd 480 down the road may be a bit of a problem, since I know there are fewer of them out there, since the 470 sold so much more better.
  • July 24th, 2011, 02:23 PM
You could get three of them, but will be a bit of a waste due to only being capable of two-way SLI.... Think that's the only reason I won't get one....

    I'm after 465s, 470s and 570s.....
