think is the name of the program which fad uses to process it's jobs. the two names are used interchangeably. i think the cray link was a bit of self-amusement on pphalans part. (you so crazy, pp ) it amused me seeing a cray link in there, anyway. 100mb/s ethernet will probably still be a bottleneck. read up on gigabit ethernet. |

I think you can get Beowulf versions for Redhat and Mandrake (not sure about others) http://www.softlookup.com/display.asp?id=40213
or try this: http://www.cacr.caltech.edu/beowulf/.../building.html
The problem is still the bottleneck between PCs though.
Gigabit Ethernet Max throughput: 1024 Mb/s = 125 MB/s
PC2700 Max Throughput = 2664 MB/s
The throughput of gigabit ethernet doesn't compare to the RAM throughput... I don't think throughput over ethernet is the main problem though- its the delay thats the problem. It'll be ok for some kinds of problems though. |

No, there are no cluster apps for XP that I am aware of.
2000 and 2003 do clustering, but not in the same sense that beowulf does.

I don't think you can do it with MS - Microsoft would have to release it as they're the only ones with the XP source code. Why don't you think you can do it in Linux?
I'm sure you can get encoding programs that can use multiple PCs though- my cost a few $k though... I'd think you'd be better off with a dual CPU machine though. |

I would say that if your not smart enough to have found the informaion on your own by now, then you probly won't be able to figure out how to build a cluster. If you are serious you should install linux and learn how to use it first. Then worry abut combining multiple machines. Forget about windows, because even if you do find software to do it it will be really expensive especially if you need to run a server os such as windows 2003.
