hello everybody..
i've got 2 computers.....both running an amd 2 ghz with 512 ddr ram
what i wanna know is..can i make a mini supercomputer just with these two?
if yes..then how do i go about it? they are already networked via a coaxial cable...i'm using win xp pro...
also..will it make encoding videos faster?
thanks in advance |

In a nutshell, no.
It can be done to some degree via clustering (Beowulf) on Linux. But hardly worth it for 2 PCs.

thank you siliconjunkie...but do u think its gonna work for 3 pcs??
please tell me more about clustering..
where can i find info on pooling the power of networked computers onto one machine? is this possible with 3 machines? |

More effort that it's worth.

hi whitehawk...what do u mean its more effort ?? aren't 3 amd 2 ghz processors put together going to make video encoding any faster?
isn't it gonna be the total time divided by 3?
thanx for the link pphalan..will check it out now
any more suggestions? anybody? |

some top end software can utilise distributed PCs to speed up encoding (like Think does!). You're better off getting a dual CPU machine to be honest though, assuming your encoding software can make use of two CPUs. Linking systems using Ethernet isn't particularly practical for most applications as the delay in waiting for data to travel between PCs is a big bottleneck.
If you want to do it for fun, have a look at Beowulf tho - but you're gonna have to learn to use Linux instead of Windows so you'd probably want to have another PC for Windows (I don't think dual-booting would be practical for that).
In the mean time, are you running FaD?

hii danny
like u said..the bottlenecks could be caused..but will that make a difference if i use a 100 mbps ethernet card..i mean we guys (me and my friends) just wanna see if bringing 3 computers together could speed up things..i would like to try it anyway for fun
so kindly answer the following
1.which version of linux do i install??
2.do i have to install it on all the pcs or just the server?
3.please tell me more about THINK...BEOWULF..and urls?? (and wht is fad)
thank you |
