Question
Modifying a new comp

Don't have time or energy to build a new computer right now. Looking at getting mostly what I want already built and upgrading pieces of it. End resulting - box should cost 1500 or less (hopefully). Want to have cash for software and a new monitor.

Was thinking of this monitor :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824138015

Need for office work so looking to get MS Office & standard software.
Going to be burning CDs/DVDs. Don't plan on watching DVDs from comp.
Also want to play high end games. (halflife, doom 3, etc)

Long term want to network this comp with another one (hardwire, not wireless).

Mostly concerned about power supply, heat, available slots and long time use before needing to upgrade again.

Need advice / suggestions on the following :

For base computer :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883102619

Then adding either 6800GT or 7800GT graphics card :
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130215 or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130234

Plus a better sound card - possibly this one :

Will this work ? Any problems that I might get into ?
Other things I'll need to upgrade ?

Thanks.
- Lisa

Just a quick glance puts you over your 1500 dollar budget, or right up to the nose...but yeah, you'd be well off with a system like that. The power supply should be okay, but you may want to consider upgrading it if you get the more powerful graphics card as it's only sitting at 17amps on the 12v rail, especially if you ever think of adding any more fans/peripherals.

the 7800gt

Quote:
System Requirements Minimum of a 450 Watt power supply
An available 6 pin PCI-E power connector

Plus, it's a VIVO card, so unless you plan on using the Video IN, you can save yourself a couple of bucks and get a non VIVO card ( Video In, Video Out )
