| Help With An Old Dell Dimension Mod
Hey there everyone...noob here. I just pulled my old Dell Dimension 8100 out of my garage and started it up. It takes it's sweet time even trying to open folders, but it has a good amount of memory. I wanted to turn it into a pretty nice budget gaming machine. Is it possible to use the Dell as framework and upgrade it, or does it make more sense to start from scratch? Here's some info on it: OS: Windows XP Motherboard: Intel Motherboard, Intel Tehama Chipset, AGP 1.5V signal support, Supports Intel socket W (423 pin) processors starting at speeds of 1.0 GHz, Intel ICH2 South-bridge device LPC interface Integrated IDE Interface Ultra DMA 66 Mode 4 Ultra DMA 100 Hublink Interface Alert on LAN functionality (SM BUS) USB 2 UHCI host controllers with a total of 4 ports LAN - On motherboard /W SOS functionality 10/100Mbps LAN on the motherboard using the 3COM 3C920V3 (Revolution) LAN controller Wake On LAN & ACPI support RJ45 LAN connector integrated into the motherboard SOS functionality Processor: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1400 MHZ Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce2 Ultra RAM: 256 MB ( )
And like I said, I'm looking to turn this into a budget-mid price gaming machine. Thanks in advance for the help!

Start from scratch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a Dimension 8100 & plan to use it for learning Linux. It isn't worth spending a dime one to turn it into a gamer. I would make a nice classic gamer for DOS & Win 95 based games.

I agree with JLK.
You'd be better off starting from scratch. Dell's aren't even a good start normally..

Ya, it is time to start over. In order to get a decent gaming machine everything you have will need to be replaced.
If you are looking at building a gaming machine on a budget, I suggest you take a look at the parts list I put together for a build I was going to do a few weeks ago, total price is about $450-500: Computer Build - $500

Gaming on it.. mmmmm, no. Older games yes, newer games no.
RAM for that beast will cost a fortune to upgrade. |

The problem is that the Dim 8100 takes Rambus RAM.
Load Windows 98 and install some games for the kids (or your nieces and nephews). |
