your problem may be solved in 3 ways. transforming 9V to 12V or 12V to 9V or providing a separate power source with 9V output voltage. basing also from the picture, you have there an installed transformer reponsible for stepping down the line voltage to 9Vac. you just have to install a cable from the txformer and out of the case. or from the 12Vdc supply of the PS, you can place a resistor in series to create a voltage drop of about 3V and you will have 9V at the load.
just be careful. please don't follow any steps I made in here if you have any doubt on it. |

From what I am seeing so far, I will have to do something fancy to have it running all the time. The 9v battery backup is for when the power goes out your clock will retain the time. I seem to remember that this feature is only good for about 1/2 an hour. The transformer doesn't seem to give off to much heat so I might just leave it inline and use the house current to run this thing. I'll mount the transformer on the back of the tower. That should simplify things a bit. |

How bout an LCD instead?
Crystalfontz makes many different modules and with the software you can program it to display much more info then just the time, they are 12v and different configs are available depending on where youd like to mount it...
Have a look: http://www.crystalfontz.com/ |

Beemer,
Although it has a 9V backup, it may run on 12V if you are lucky, by that I mean the transformer may have a 12V output, have you got a meter to measure it?
If there is an AC voltage to the clock module then it will have the rectifying and regulation components onboard, from what I can see in the photo that is the case. There are two red wires from the TXFR to the board and just below where they disappear there are some diodes, see pictures.
Measure the voltage on the end of the two red wires, let us know.
As for the ribbon on the right, you can probably just cut them off at the board, they feed the radio section.

EDIT cant upload picture to my site !!!!, I will try later.

SaTaNcLaUz:
Where was that before I ripped apart my extra alarm clock? lol

Thanks for the link. I've seen that companies page before. I think it was what originally got me thinking about the case clock.

I think I'm going to mount the transformer on the back of the tower. Seems to be the easiest thing to do. Cutting the holes for the time setting buttons and the display should take a fair amount of time. Better get at it.
Thanks for the help folks. Pictures to come when finished.
Cheers!

Here's what I came up with.
I had to accomadate the time setting buttons so I mounted them on the side of the case face. It was quite a chore making those little holes.
Here's the final product.
No more clock in the taskbar for me!
Thanks again folks.
Cheers!

Nice job!...now if you can only set the thing to run "down" like a bomb counting to zero....and maybe trigger a wav file of an explosion...heh heh
