Well the ASUS Silent Knight II cooler wont disappoint you, though it is a bit expensive, but it gave me a +- 10 degrees celsius drop in CPU temperature when on full load over the stock cooler, and like 2 degrees celsius on idle.

I put a watercooling system on my quad core. It is quiet, and it runs super cool. I am very happy with it

Well if you are OCing you definately want a good cooler that is. If not you will not be able to get very far on a stock solution

If you got the time, money, and patience, I'd go for water.
If you don't like that fact of having water in your PC (can't blame you) there are a couple of very good air coolers that will almost match the performance of watercooling.
Depending on your budget, you might check into these. Newegg.com - XIGMATEK HDT-S1284EE 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks
Midrange price, but best bang for buck. Newegg.com - Thermalright Ultra-120 CPU Cooling Heatsink - CPU Fans & Heatsinks
Most expensive, but pretty much your best air cooler out.You can put 2x120mm fans in a push/pull config, and you can't beat it. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE MOUNTING BRACKET THAT SITS BEHIND THE MOBO IF YOU ORDER THIS. Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro 92mm CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks
Again, more along the line of midrange. But it uses push pins, which are a PITA sometimes. Newegg.com - Tuniq Tower 120 Universal CPU Cooler 120mm Cooling Fan and Fan Controller/Heatsink - CPU Fans & Heatsinks
About the same as the 1284, but not as good as the Ultra 120. But a lot of people swear by this thing.
IMO, whatever aftermarket cooler you get, get the retention bracket that sits behind the Mobo. It does help the PCB from flexing. Some of the HSF's are HUGE anymore. |

most aftermarket air coolers will do AS good if not better than those. |

The best cooler right now is actually the OCZ Vendetta II. Costs less than $50.
Get a better 120 mm fan for it (100 CFM+), MX-2 thermal paste, and perhaps a bolt thru kit for even better performance.
IF you really want to, get a 120 mm fan to the rear using zip ties.
Virtually the same bang for buck as the Xigmatek shown by KarmaKiller, but better performance. |
