| Upgrading PC with New Parts
now i was browsing through my components website and i stumbled upon an upgrade kit Komplett.ie - Komplett Upgrade Kit Intel Edition which got me interested.
now the current system has been around for 3 years used by family members, i sometimes use it for a bit of gaming and video and photo editing also.
PC eMachines 8220
MotherBoard - Trigem Alaska3 Mainboard
Pentium 4 2.80 GHz processer
160 GB Hard Drive
1.5 GB of DDR2 RAM
and few month back i purchased these 2 items to liven it up more.
Sapphire Technology RADEON HD 3850 512MB AGP
OCZ Technology 500W STEALTHXSTREAM POWER SUPPLY
now what got me thinking is for 250eu i get a Q6600 new Mini-ATX motherboard and 2 gb of ram. The reason im interested in Mini-Atx is beacause my current case is a mini-tower and im not planining on a full upgrade.
now my idea was to buy this upgrade keep my current PSU and also buy an extra 500gb Sata drive and instal a fresh copy of windows on that and that should run smooth from there.
but the problem i run into is that i got and AGP HD3850 graphics card which cant be used with the new motherboard and it cost me 100eu which to me seems like a waste. thats the only problem that puts me off buying this upgrade.
Here are some current photos of the pc if it means any difference...i measured the current motherboard and the one in the upgrade package and it seems to be ok so hopefully it will fit the case.
Is this upgrade worth it? Im not planning building a new system any time soon maybe this upgrade can put it off for another while.
Im am not a hardcore gamer but i do enjoy the new games at least being playable with decent fps and i would like to have faster encoding speed with video editing.
Im still open to suggestion on graphics card if anyone has any recomendations decent price and good quality Komplett.ie - PCI-Express post up your ideas and also ideas on what i should do with my current AGP card.
Thank you for your time.
Ps: Im located in ireland |

I would get the parts separate and get a better board.
CPU: Komplett.ie - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz Socket LGA775, 8MB, BOXED w/fan
Mobo: Komplett.ie - MSI P43 NEO-F, P43, Socket-775, DDR2, 1600FSB, ATX, ICH10, PCI-Ex(2.0)x16
Ram: Komplett.ie - OCZ nVIDIA SLI DDR2 PC6400 2048MB KIT, XTC, w/two 1024MB, CL4-4-4-15
Hard Drive (this one has a little more space and is faster): Komplett.ie - Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB, SATA, 16MB Cache, 7200RPM
Graphics: Komplett.ie - Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3, PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI/HDMI/HDCP
I presume you are re-using your old PSU (which is sufficient). You might want to get a new case though so its easier to sell the old system.
If you are a gamer I suggest going for a faster dual core instead, which will beat the Q6600 in gaming. Its a little cheaper too. Komplett.ie - Intel Coreâ„¢ 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz, Socket LGA775, 6MB, 1333Mhz BOXED w/fan

thank you for your reply
the reason im not getting a better motherboard is because i did not have in mind a case upgrade so that why im getting a m-atx as im not going to take apart the current case and get all the new stuff so i thought ill just upgrade this case with some newer parts.
i might consider getting them separently to include the ram you posted as for the gaming as i mentioned im not a real gamer as i use pc for edcoding and editing also id rather have the quad core.
any more recomendations? |

Firstly, that motherboard is an AMD motherboard. It will not work with that Q6600. Secondly, if you are not going to game, scrap the HD 4850. There is no point in that. 150 buys you a better processor and 4 gigs of ram which will come in handy.
This one below is if you hardly want to game at all. The motherboard supports onboard video.
CPU: Komplett.ie - Intel Coreâ„¢ 2 Quad Q9400 2,66GHz, Socket 775, 6MB, 1333MHz, Boxed w/Fan
Motherboard: Komplett.ie - MSI G43M2-F, G45, Socket-775, DDR2, m-ATX, GbLAN, ICH10, PCI-Ex(2.0)x16
Ram: Komplett.ie - OCZ nVIDIA SLI DDR2 PC6400 4096MB KIT, XTC, w/two 2048MB, CL5-4-4-15
Either way, you want 4 gigs of ram. If you want to do a little bit of gaming, then get the Q6600 and get this card instead. Komplett.ie - Sapphire Radeon HD 4670 512MB GDDR3, PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI/HDMI/HDCP |
