That hard drive is the old version of the one I picked. Its a little slower. But not that much. I would try to get the new one though, if you can. As for the CPU, with a budget like that the AMD quad core is going to be much more worth it in the future. In any case its faster at the moment as well. You might as well get it since your budget is nice and high.
You also don;t need a sound card. Onboard is going to be more than enough unless you have a really good set of speakers. In that case, you should know that Creative really sucks. Overpriced and crappy drivers that many people complain cause a whole bunch of problems. Their drivers also come with a ton of stuff you don't need that just slows down your computer.
If you must get a card, here. But you will really not be able to tell much of a difference unless you have sensitive ears and a really good set of speakers.
This one would be more for gaming Newegg.com - ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 Channels PCI Express Interface Sound Card - Sound Cards
And this one more for music (I personally love this brand) Newegg.com - HT OMEGA STRIKER 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Interface Sound Card - Sound Cards

PullMyFoot, the board you linked to was actually an x58 board, probably just copied the wrong link. I didn't know that the Phenom IIs were out today, but that is a good option, still not as good as Intel's highend, but not too far behind.
Most of what PullMyFoot recommended was good. I would look for a sound card from Auzentech if you want one though. |

Oops. Ok that ASUS board you picked is good. Stick with that one. I must have made a mistake in the link. I changed the link to the ASUS board you have
What I said in another thread, applies to you too:
If you have a spare copy of any OS stick with that. Windows 7 will be out in a bit. I know I'm not supposed to say this here, but if you don;t have a spare, just illegally install one you have on two computers for now. Its really a waste to buy a new OS this close to Windows 7

I would not get the new AMD chips. Intels are STILL faster. You can get a q9550 and it will be faster then the amd chips. If you still want something faster, pick up a I7. They flat out smoke then Phenom II's.
If your a AMD fanboy, then yes these are the CPU's for you. If you want best bang for buck, Intels is the way to go IMO. |

I beg to differ. The AMD chips, while not the fastest out there (though somewhat close), is based on a very cheap platform. The boards come real cheap and you get to stick to nice cheap DDR2 ram. You also have the option to upgrade to AM3-based CPUs in the future, you can't do that with a Q9550 because they likely will not make anymore LG775 CPUs. |
