| Need advice on system build
Hey guys, here's the situation.
I currently have a dell dimension 3000 (not my only computer, I have 6 now but this is the one I'm dealing with). The good news is that I have 4GB or RAM (believe it's 533) and I have a Pentium 2.8ghz. This box is just a backup to play some older games on, but I only have PCI video with it (running a 6200) in it.
What I need is a PCI X-press capable board that I can use existing components with. I'll be moving over the 2.8, the 4GB ram, and an older 40gb IDE drive and IDE CD drive. What I need is a newer PCI X-press board that can support this older hardware and I want to find the absolute cheapest I can get. I'd also like to have onboard sound (a must). Gigabit lan would be nice but not a requirement if we can keep price down.
Could any of you recommend a board that fits this description? Price is everything here and the lower the better. Thanks in advance.
In summary; Cheapest PCI Xpress board that will support 4GB 533, Pentium 2.8Ghz, IDE HDD and CD. |

Is it a skt 775 CPU then?
NM, dumb question given the ram your using. Give me a few, I'm looking around.
EDIT:
Is the 4Gb of ram 4x 1Gb sticks, or 2x 2Gb sticks?

KK, will those boards still run older 775 single core Pentiums fine? with out much trouble?
I know some older 775 Pentium4 chip boards won't run the newer C2D's or anything higher, but is it the same way the other way around?
I've never used or had a Pentium 4 era system, Socket 423, 478 or 775, so I have no clue really (that was my AMD period of my life LOL), was just going by the compatibility listings on newegg for the chips the boards support.
as to the deals, also if your someone willing to take a chance with Open Box items (some extra items are usually missing, but sometimes Items are new in box with box just physically opened, maybe someone took it out to take a look or whatever) Newegg.com - Open Box: MSI G31M3-L V2 LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard Newegg.com - Open Box: ASRock G31M-S LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard Newegg.com - Open Box: ASUS P5N73-AM LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7050 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard Newegg.com - Open Box: ASUS P5KPL-AM/PS LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
some other deals elsewhere than newegg:
(should be new in box) Biostar P4M890-M7 TE Micro 775 LGA775 uATX Motherboard, VIA P4M890 Chipset, Supports Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs, DDR2 533 31.99 Jetway nForce 650i SLI LGA775 ATX Motherboard N650GE, Supports Core 2 Quad CPUs, Dual DDR2 800, SLI, GBE 39.99
This would sure make KK smile eVGA LGA775 mATX Motherboard 112-CK-NF77-A1, nForce 630i / GeForce 7150 Chipset, Supports Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, DDR2 800, PCIe, Brand new sealed 49.99

Thanks a lot guys. I appreciate your taking the time to look into this. I looked around and didn't see those boards myself, so this is a big help.
I think I'm going with the Zotac board. Newegg.com - ZOTAC NF610I-E-E LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 7050 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards
For a couple of reasons. One is that it's not open box. I was considering the Biostar that Shyguy put up but considering the $10 rebate on the Zotac making it $35, I'd rather spend 3 or 4 more bucks and get one that's not open.
Other than that the decision came down to price and recommendation for Zotac in regard to folding farm. Thanks again everyone for your help. |
