You get four stars for having an 'ultra' PSU.

Even with tri-SLI, you are probably only looking at 800 watts actual useage.

I went 4 stars because of the power supply and the Raptor drive...

Yea, the raptor drive i can see, but whats wrong with the X3 PSU's? when i bought it i searched and searched and every test i've found said it was good.

I made another thread about this cuz even after i bought it people were saying it was a bad choice so i was looking for a different psu.

    Opinions on an upgrade

Ultra has almost always been barely a step up from the real crap generic PSU's... its also Tigerdirect's in house brand. similar to Rosewill and Newegg.

and Ultra Powersupplies do not go hand in hand

if I'm not mistaken, even our resident ________ insert your own name,(don't have a proper name for them), Anonymous7 even found out about the so called performance of an Ultra PSU, they had bought one of the Modular units.

last time I remember those things being good were some of the original X-connect models, back when they first came out. after a year or two, suddenly Powmax was making the PSU's, one of the worst brands in history, making their units... not sure who's doing them now days, but I haven't heard much.

a few people have mentioned some of the Ultra units can hold up to the demand, but they are few and far between, as to which models those were I can't remember. but just as a general rule of thumb so to speak, I avoid that brand like the plague, as with some other brands.

you couldn't get me to use one, even if they paid me.

maybe take it out back and blow it up, but actually use one, no.

as the others said there's really no need for a 1000+ Watt unit, unless your going to be running 3 or 4 GPU's and a Quad core or greater system.

even if you plan on running 3 cards, a quality 1000W unit should be used, one that has a better track record/history than Ultra. last you need is a greater chance of overloading the PSU and possibly taking out all of the hardware in the system.

Newegg.com - BFG Tech LS-1200 1250W ATX 12V v2.2/EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

even this 850W unit has similar specs to the Ultra, with a single 70A 12V rail.

    Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-850HX 850W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 80 PLUS SILVER Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

but for 1KW or more, this unit is one of the best ones out there, Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Power Supplies

point is there are many more similarly priced if not cheaper, better quality and performance brands/models of PSU's out there than Ultra.

especially for a new system from the ground up build.

it may be the Ultra you have now can handle the current load, but I wouldn't want to chance it with 3 higher end GPU's and the rest of the hardware in that system.

OK so what about this one: Newegg.com - IN WIN COMMANDER IRP-COM850 850W ATX 12V 2.3 / EPS 12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply - Power Supplies

I've read about there 1200watt and fell in love with it after seeing it being tested using a peltier TEC and still staying within half a percent range between idle and load.

And honestly, only reason i got the 1k watt was because i got for a great price (around $210) and i wasn't sure if anything less would be enough for my build.

I would'nt risk it.... Never heard of them.... I will only buy PSU's made by OCZ, Corsair and Antec. There are other good brands like, BFG, Seasonic, Silverstone.

Infact here is a sticky thread on the subject.

    Power Supply Info

The PSU is the part you should not skimp on always make sure you buy a quality brand, if anything to protect that expensive hardware.

Enermax is another good one, and don't forget FSP.

There aren't a lot of good power supplies out there, Aaron has listed most of the ones I would trust.

In Win is another bad choice.

I can't believe you would spend that much on a computer and not get good power supply.

I meant, now that you know, the short list of good power supplies.

Power supplies are the least understood components of the new build posts, and one of the most important.

please tell me you didn't read too much into the newegg reviews?

when reading many of those take with a grain of salt, half the people on there don't know what they're talking about or are just as confused and end up talking out of their butts LOL... once in a while I'll read an accurate or good review though.

Yep! I have some laptop memory, paperweights, because I believed a review @ Newegg.
My fault, if I had kept reading I would have found 10 other later reviews by people with incompatible memory , because of the same STUPID review.

To be fair the reviews when read in full did net the right memory.

Did you read the jonnyGURU review? I trust their PSU reviews & wouldn't sweat keeping the Ultra X3 1000W.

Your right it doesn't look too bad.

What they don't cover is will it last, and will it take out your whole system if it goes?

I wish they had real intake temps, those outlet temps (158f) at full load are beyond hand touch. (120f). That's scary.
