Nick, AM3 cpus will run in an AM2+ socket.

The 4850 has more stream processors (800 vs. 640) and has double the mit rate on the memory interface (256bit vs. 128bit). The 4850 does have a slightly slower core clock speed though (625mhz vs. 750mhz). The 4850 also consistently scores higher than the 4770 in Tom's Hardware VGA charts.

The 4850 (Nickslick made it clear which was better and cheaper).... C'mon dude, you got do some research into these things you can't expect everyone to give you the answer all the time.... |

he could spring for one of those new Radeon 5770's... 800 Stream processors, or the 5750 with 720. Both Support DirectX 11, not that its a big deal now, but has support for them anyways.
