I think your missing the point here, we're not here to make your choices for you, or make up your mind for you, we offer suggestions, and advice, as well as try to explain why, with out going into much detail, its ultimately up to you to decide on your parts.
as others have said, you need to start doing some of this research and studying on your own.
as to what parts work with what, and what parts are good, for what reasons, etc, its all part of learning about your PC, whether your going to build it yourself or have someone else do it for you.

Being skeptical is good, but you will ultimately choose what to buy. I could build you a kick butt gaming rig, but you would probably cry at the price tag. It will be between $3-4000. You have to compare suggested parts for yourself. You probably found us by google, take a part # ( 4870, gtx275, etc...) and google it. Read the reviews, some good, bad or ugly. You will see a pattern after a few reviews of a given part. We will make suggestions, but not choose for you. If you really want, I will make you a list for a moderate gaming computer, it won't be in your price range because it is made for MY preferences, from MY research, for MY needs, and in MY budget.
I have just built 2 new ones. I will list all the specs., they will cost you about $3000 though. To build one for you, there are companies out there; Dell,HP, Gateway, etc.... You won't get as good as one you do yourself, but it is easier.
Again, Aaron has picked out some good parts for you, do some research. I will try to list all the essential parts to build a rig.
Case-holds it all
Processor-CPU,chip, examples i7,i5,dual core pentium
Motherboard-mobo for short, what the processor and all is mounted on
RAM- memory
Harddrive-HDD, stores files,OS
Graphics Card-gpu, runs video, may be integrated on mobo
Power Supply-ps, takes AC power from the wall and powers the computer
CD/DVD drive- place to put cd's/dvd's also needed to load programs/OS
Operating System-OS, Windows,Linux, you get the picture here
Monitor- screen, you probably have one
Mouse/Keyboard- if you don't know quit now.
These are the essentials. I will come on tomorrow and update this with the parts I would get. This will be one of my actual computers.

No. 1 is that there's no 'right' part to buy. It's all based on opinion. Some people would suggest a 5000 series Radeon, and others would suggest a 4000 series. When I was building my PC, there was an argument between 2 members over which power supply I should get (one recommended a PSU and the other said it would not work; turns out it did work fine).
No. 2 is building a computer is a kind of experience. It's much more satisfying putting together parts that you've chosen, rather than just buying it all because somebody told you to. It's also useful to be able to chose the right parts. Since building my first pc, I've designed lots of computers for people, and it helped when I upgraded it, because I knew exactly what its strengths and weaknesses are.
