| Extreme Cooling modification
Hi folks, I just rebuilt my HP with a Celeron 340 into another case, It has 2Gigs of RAM, an 8400GS. I am running a duel boot with XP and Vista. I have added a 350 Watt PSU. I play games pretty good with it, even Left 4 dead runs pretty well, My problem is keeping the thing cool. I ran across some fans that I salvaged out of an old Digital Server 7000. I aquired it free through craigslist. The thing was instorage for 5 years and had a family of mice that took up residence on the motherboard. so the machine itself was useless. so anyway, I want to cut 3 nice holes out of the case panel and mount these fans into it. No of course, I am planning to power these things from an external source. The fan specs are as follows. Nidec BETA V. TA450DC. They are 12V DC .49AMP. Give me an idea on how I can wire these up to a 12V Power supply. I also have a power switch from an old blown 140W PSU that I can use to turn them on. I just need to know how to wire these things. I have a huge box of power supplies from old nintendo power supplies, and phone ones, and battery chargers, way too many different ones to list. I love to tinker and modify, I dont throw things like that away, for reasons like this!! |

I cannot believe that 30 people looked at this and I got no reply. Well, nevermind, I just took the 12V power supply and ran them parallel to both fans and added the switch. the thing works great. I mounted them onto a vent grate and I am going to mount that onto a plexiglass panel for the side. these things are like leaf blowers. I love it. I had 2 smaller fans blowing in, I am going to turn them so that they blow out. so I will have the 2 big ones blowing in and a total of 3 smaller ones blowing out. plus the case is well ventilated so this is going to work out I think. |

TBH 30 ppl probably looked at this thinking what I'm thinking right now, why on earth do you need 5 extra fans and an additional psu to cool this thing.

Well, when you play Left 4 Dead and HL2 on a 2.93 Celeron 340Prescott, things get a little warm in there to say the least. Furthermore, I like to keep my CPU at 44 degrees celsius regardless of my CPU load. the cooler the better. I will have some pics here soon. Of that and a another little project I threw together cause I got bored. |

anyone ever see the website about the guys that chilled a 486SX25 in the freezer then overclocked it to over 200 MHz. I thought that was the neatest thing. Project E.U.N.U.C.H. |

Anyway, before this little project, in order to play games like that, I had to keep the side panel off and put a box fan up against it blowing in. I find this to be much easier and not such a hassle, especially cause the box fan also blew on me and I would get cold. And these fans, I believe use alot less Juice. So what do you all think, is this Overkill?
Is there a such thing as overkill when you are cooling your chips? |
