Building cheap gaming rig (500 -600)$

Hey guys! Im not sure which section this belongs in but i guess ill post here.
As of last night i decided im going to build a gaming pc. My price range is 500 - 600.
I need to build it cheap, But i dont want to slack on the parts that i really need.
    Right now i have a emachines el-1200
It runs css and l4d at 12 - 17 fps. If on a good server ill run about 20fps. (all extremely low settings)
I thought this was good fps until last week when i started talking with friends about pc's.
They all laughed at mine when i told them my specs and my fps. I have 2gb of ram, AMD Athlon Processor 2650e 1.60GHz
    and 123mb video card memory.
I thought i had good fps but when they told me they get around 100 - 200 i couldent believe it.
So thats what made my decision to make a gaming rig.
Ill be aquiring the parts over time. (4 months?)
I live in a low income household so ill be picking up 10's and 5's and 20's every now and then. Ill find ways to get income.
    Im 16.
They said it would be well worth it once i did it. Ill be ordering the parts online, Every now and then we go to the best buy in fort smith so ill be able to get stuff there as well.
But i would prefer doing it online. People have referred me to new egg.
So what parts should i get?
    Thanks. -Suff.

We wouldn't suggest poor quality parts.

Sounds about normal for source games...

Okay first thing, its never a good idea to buy parts one bit at a time. Always buy all at once.

Do not go to best buy and get ripped off.... Buy from newegg.

ATM, you will be looking at a phenom II setup, with mabye a 5770/250, if you are going to buy in 4 or so months its best to wait as tech changes fast and may be something new/better.

    Thanks. -Suff.

If you live near one microcenter would be a good place to buy parts from since your 16 and can't use a credit card.
