New PC Heavy Gaming Rig
Hey everyone, haven't posted here in a long time
but i need some help
!
-- I am looking at building a new gaming rig for my friend for his birthday (1000$ budget) and I was wondering if I could have some help from you guys making a parts list. Here is what is needed and not needed:
NEEDED:
-As stated above this will be a heavy gaming rig so preferably a powerful GPU (games played include COD, WoW, Farcry, HoN // all on high settings have a real nice monitor and likes everything to be crisp)
-Maybe a small solid state drive for OS and some games (small because of budget)
-I like AMD builds (mainly because its just a little cheaper)
-I really like to keep everything cool (good air flow case, but cool looking. He has an old alien ware tower now so i dont want to downgrade him to something boring looking)
-Maybe a Caviar HDD nothing too fancy
NOTNEEDED :
-Speakers
-Monitor
-Mouse
-Keyboard
-OS
Any help/questions would be greatly appreciated/answered

Heya, long time no see!

I'll post a intel build shortly. IMO, you'd be MUCH better off getting an I5 system. They are pretty fast, and fairly cheap considering how new they are.
Let me get coffee made and cleaned up, and I'll be back in here posting.

Okies, here's what I would build if I had 1k to spend. I should note that most all of these prices can be beat if you have a micro center local. They have great deals on CPU/Mobo/RAM, so you might check there before you order from egg.

So I was 8 over, that's not bad. But this PC would MAX ANY game, even crysis in 1080 res with no issues. The CPU can easily be clocked to 3.8Ghz or better. Really that's a damn fast system all together.
I didn't add a SSD mainly because, 1. in this budget it's almost impossible to fit one in, and 2 I don't think they are worth it yet. Even if you got a small 30Gb SSD, your OS would take up at least half of that, so you'd maybe have room for 3-4games, and then it would be full. If your gonna do ssd then you need a backup LARGE HDD, and then maybe you can pull it off.
I just don't see it as necessary, especially when your building a gaming system on this budget. The money can be used in other places that would show greater improvement then a SSD. (like the GPU in my list)

XFX has a better warranty, so I guess them. Visiontek was just the cheapest "name brand" I trusted.

Alright ya ill probably go with the XFX.
-Now you say that i5 can be OC'd to 3.8GHz is that with the stock HS ?
-
February 9th, 2010, 04:54 PM #11
Oops.. I didn't add a cooloer in.

One of the systems I built they kept the stock cooler, I got the chip up to 3.6Ghz and the temps were fine. If you can spend another $30 or so I'd recommend this:
Newegg.com - ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 92mm Fluid Dynamic CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks
You'll be able to push 3.8Ghz+ with it.

saw that, but it didn't say if it was for 3.5" or 2.5", you would think the 2.5" size, but you never know, thats why I said they might need one.... wait nevermind, I see, I typed out "Will Probably", I meant to type "Might", was late last night and falling asleep when I posted, had been up for 15 hours yesterday with no naps on one of my days off LOL.

Ya i will definitely get an after market cooler, 30 dollars more shouldn't be a problem.
I do have a question about after market coolers though has anyone ever built a system with something like this, was basically just wondering if it was any good compared to other Heat sinks around its price.

looked into it before I built my current system, depends on your case, and room you'll have, and not sure if their any better than traditional air coolers really, definitely not as good as a real water cooling setup though.
they are nice, but mainly have to see if it will fit in your case and work with whatever components are installed.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

If you going for something like that, check into the H50. There have been many great reviews about it. And lots of people on other forums have been have a great experience with that cooler.
Here's a nice review of the case

I believe it's got the front fan, rear fan, and spots up top for 2x 140mm fans.
