    Dell 4600 upgrade

I have an old Dell 4600 from 2003. It has 512mb of ram and a Pentium 4 (2.66Ghz) and uses Windows XP. It was working fine until I installed I-tunes and it slowed my whole computer down.
Can I upgrade this computer reasonably ? Or am I better off building my own new PC ? I don't do any gaming, I just use it for surfing the net, e-mailing and music. I was considering going to 1GB or Ram to see if that helps anything. What about the hard drive ? Can I put a newer (more GB's) unit in ?

A new computer would be best. For web browsing and email, I think we can make what you have work. Save the money.

Buy an external hard drive and back up all your files. Reformat your computer and install Windows xp again. It will run even better than when you put itunes on it and if it worked well enough for you then it will work better now.

A RAM upgrade if you are to upgrade anything is your best bet. Though I remember it to be really expensive to upgrade RAM on some older dell pcs.

You can add another hard drive but that will not change the speed of the computer.

    Songbird - Welcome

    Uninstall itunes and try that.

A gig of ram would help for what you use the computer for. Hard drive can be a SATA, but it has to be set to SATA I using the drive's switch. A lot of the newer hard drives don't have this switch though. In my 4600 I have a western digital WD3200AAJS.

Defrag and run the popular Ccleaner program.

Get rid of some junk that you don't need starting in your task bar. Mike Lin's Home Page Once installed go into the control panel and look for the computer icon.
