    Welcome to TechIMO!

Taking a quick look at the game specs, the combined requirements are, the recommended specs are 2 gig of RAM, 3Ghz processor, GForce 8800, and 750MB hard drive space.
It could also mean a new power supply.

Before we can make any recommendations, on an upgrade, we will need to know more about your mother board.
Make and model, and we can probably look it up.

My guess this is a P4 board, and a new build for a little more would be way faster than any upgrade you can do to that system

If it doesn't have at least an AGP slot any upgrade is out of the question.

Its not top of the line and a bare budget gaming PC, but its going to be night and day performance compared to what you have now, heck it will be night and day 365 times over from what you have now.

The only REAL weak link in that entire list is the video card, its a bare bottom of the barrel Budget gaming card.

The Power Supply should be able to handle just about any Video card up into the $150-175 range easily with that list of parts.

The Hard drive isn't the fastest but its a good midrange performing drive.

You'll have 4GB of RAM, and a fairly speedy yet budget Dual Core CPU. case isn't too bad for cooling either (I have a newer variation on that case design for one of my cases).

Windows 7 64-bit to allow windows to see and utilize all 4GB of RAM, and the 1GB of memory on the video card.

Its a little beyond the $400 budget, but by only $22-23 after shipping costs.

    Grand Total: $422.73

There is a $15 Mail In Rebate on the Video card, so depending on how long it takes for that to get back in the mail or at all, could shave a bit more off what was spent on the entire thing.

But everything else you'd need for the system should be there, SATA cables for the Hard drive and DVD Burner, should be included in the Motherboards box, most come with a couple or more SATA cables these days.

CPU comes with a stock Heatsink which should be fine, case comes with at least one 120mm Case fan for the rear, I can't remember if it has one in the front, mine did, but its a newer variation on that cases design. But the perforated Mesh front panels will be nice for free flowing case ventilation.

XP is old, does not support DirectX 10 or 11, you'll want 64-bit for your OS running more than 3GB of RAM (32-bit can only address up to 4GB total system memory, including RAM, Video memory, Cache memory from CPU, Hard drives, etc). So 3GB RAM, and 1GB Video memory, your already at the 4GB max, add in CPU and what not cache memory, your actual usable RAM would be a bit less than 3GB, so at least 1GB of RAM would be wasted.

Plus Windows 7 is just all around better for newer games anyways.

Aside from some legacy compatibility issues there's really no reason anyone should stick with Windows XP on newer systems.

Going from XP to Windows 7, you will have to re-learn how the OS works, where things are at, etc, but its worth it, may be a bit frustrating at first, maybe a bit lost, but its worth it in the end.

I ran XP since a year after it came out, and I switched to the Beta Release Candidate of Windows 7 about 2 years ago, and then once the time limit on that ran out bought Windows 7, so I was able to test out 7 for about 9 months or so before I finally bought it, and it was a bit confusing at first but I soon learned many of the ins and outs of it. First thing you learn, if your at all savvy in any way with the Operating Systems (XP, Vista, etc) is turn off the damn UAC interface, it will question every damn single thing you do, "Are you sure you want to...".

I swear if you even so much as feel like your going to Fart in front of the PC, it will ask if you really want to let it rip or not.

I did that with Vista on my brothers PC, and did the same on mine, dropped the UAC settings down to minimum and its far less annoying and intrusive with all the messages about making sure you want to do that, etc.

Any other suggestion would only be a slight sideways adjustment, I learned a long time ago, just go with what Shyguy says.

He has listed a solid system, so to boost that system, all you have to do is increase the budget for the video card.

Yeah only things really to boost on that list is the video card, or a better performing Hard drive (32 or 64MB Cache SATA 3Gb/s or SATA 6Gb/s 7200 RPM), and the video card.

At least for a decent Budget to mid range gaming system.

but as it stands now, the Video card would be the best bump in performance.

but coming from what they have now, as it stands its far above and beyond what they have.
