Building my first puter, will it work?

Hey all!

I've got the chance to build a computer for dirt cheap. This will be my first adventure into building from scratch & would like to know if what i've chosen will all work together. I wanted to build a new computer for a friend who is on a very tight budget and i've costed this for £194.52 GBP.

Cases ____________ CAS-3803-ATX-300W ______ BEANTECH-MINI-ATX-300W CASE
Motherboards _____ GA-7DXE SOCKET A _______ DDR AC97 AMD 761 CHIPSET
CPU's ____________ CPU-DURON-1.3GB ________ AMD DURON 1.3GB CPU OEM
Heatsink Fans ____ HFA-DP5-6H51 ___________ HEATSINK FAN SUPPORTS DURON/TK7
Hard Drives ______ ST-40DM+8-133+60 _______ MAXTOR 40GB 7200RPM ATA133 6E040L0
Graphics card ____ NV-TNT2M64-32-PAL ______ PALIT NVIDIA TNT2M64 32MB
CD-RW Drives _____ CD-RW-48XCYBER-RT ______ CYBER 48X16X48 RETAIL BOXED
Monitors _________ AMTE-VC170-BT1791 ______ OEM 17 CRT 0.27MM
Fax Modems _______ NET-LYNX-56/INT/AM _____ NET-LYNX 56K V92 AMBIENT CTRLLERLESS MOD
Memory ___________ DDR-128MB-PC2100 _______ MAJOR ON 3RD 128MB DDR PC2100
Speakers _________ SP-PA280-KINYO _________ KINYO 240W PMPO RETAIL

So will it work? Looking forward to your input / advice / corrections / tips

The only question I would have would be about the motherboard and the Duron 1.3g cpu. Since it is a older 761 motherboard, will it need a bios flash to use that newer cpu. A look at the motherboard manufacturers website would tell you the answer.

Oh yeah, and 128M ram isnt enough, itll be a little slow with just 128...especially if you try to run WindowsXP.

what I think you should get

hey man I have a radical sugestion but i know it workz becoz I use this same system all the time.

Go to http://www.todaytech.com
Sign up for an account with them and given them you details and stuff.
Then get this gear it only costs about $1500 - $1800 australian dollars

- 40GB western Digital HDD. (7200RPM Drive)
- Celeron or Petium4 1.8GH'z Processor
- Intel Motherboard that support PGA478Form factor and DDRAM and an 8X or 4X AGP slot.
- GForce4 64MB GFX card
- 512MB of DDR pc2100 RAM
- Mitsubishi Diamond view 17' monitor
- LG DVD CDR-W 48X24X48X16DVD
- What ever floppy drive keyboard and mouse you want.
- Sound Blaster live5.1! PCI soundcard
- Creative 5100 5.1Suround Sound system.
- Diamond voice 56K UE voice modem

With that you could do what ever you wanted.
It costs a little bit but if you are going to spend money on a computer they are paarts I would to make it worth it.
If you want better parts I can get you part number and psecifications for better parts ect ect ect.

I work at an Information Technology Center lol. So I am kinda into this stuff

PS: dun think I forgot anything

Well see, the puter isn't for me and the 'girl' that's buying it is only gonna use it to type things in Word and surf the net on a 56K modem (there's no broadband available). I recommended she bought a second hand puter since she only wants to spend around £200 GBP. If she bought something new an 80GB hard drive 2.0GHz CPU & 512MB with a super duper sound & video card would just go to waste. She's gonna use this about once a week if she's lucky.

I happened across a guy that's given me a huge list of hardware with the prices he'll sell me for cost price, no profit if I build the puter for this girl. So instead of her paying £800 GBP brand spankin new or £200 GBP second hand, I'm gonna built her a new puter for £200. But, since this is my first built from scratch, I dont want to buy something with her money that's incompatible.

I'm sure all I need to know is what motherboard would suit the set-up at the beginning of the post as I originally chose one with an older chipset for the 1.3g Duron. I'm hoping the others I listed will suit a 1.3g Duron.

Is this possible?!?!?

Try a Epox 8kha good versatile board, should run the Duron no prob. And they are relativly inexpensive

In that case, go for this one and ditch the TNT videocard (it's got built in video, which is just fine for 2D).

Motherboards ____ GA-7VKML ____________ GIGABYTE SOCKET A M/ATX AUDIO VGA LAN

yep..go for the GA-7VKML http://tw.giga-byte.com/MotherBoard/...s_GA-7VKML.htm

it will run the duron 1.3G and it also has built in video and built in sound so it will be a little cheaper than a seperate video card...and also a little easier and faster to setup.
