The one with a heatsink on it already is the northbridge, the one that doesn't is the southbridge.

Sorry if I'm a little late to this thread, I just came across it. Does anyone know a heatsink designed to have air sucked up through it, or that will at least work this way? The Dell Optiplex 270 3.2 P4 I use at work does this. The heatsink has a duct over it that goes to a fan on the back of the PC that pulls air away from the CPU heatsink (up through it) and out of the case. This seems a much better cooling solution than blowing air down through the heatsink and back (now hot) into the case. Even ducting air in from outside, you still end up putting the hot air that has flowed through the heatsink, back into the case. The 270 heatsink looks very similar to the ThermalRight SP-94 (heat pipes and all), although it appears to be Aluminum rather than Copper. Anyone know which heatsink Dell uses, or another heatsink that will work with air sucked up through it?

thanks,
Mike

ok, i got a quick question for ya, what do YALL use for filters? i mean it has to be big enough to get air through, but small enough to get the dust out... i was thinkin coffee filters, but that might be too small....

Did some digging on Google and found these Alpha heat sinks that work with the fan reversed (the manufacturer actually recommends this and they work better with the fan reversed than with the fan in the normal orientation).

http://tinyurl.com/ure6 for the Alpha PAL8045 Athlon/Duron heatsink.
http://tinyurl.com/urdz for Alpha PAL8942 Intel Socket 478 heatsink.

The Induction performance refers to the normal blow air into the heat sink method; Expulsion refers to sucking air up through the heat sink with the fan reversed.

The Alpha PAL8942 review here http://tinyurl.com/urdw ranks it at the top of the socket 478 heatsinks they've tested.

Alpha = 40 dba of noise compared to 27 dba

Do you know if the WhisperRock cooler works OK with the fan reversed? The Alpha is much noisier and also expensive (about $40 with fan), but it does work with the fan reversed (in fact this is recommended). I also came across this cooler from Zalman that's designed to suck air up through the heatsink and direct it out of the case through the rear case fan. Unfortunately it seems to be only available for Intel socket 478.

and the other question, i have a 500W PSU with dual fan, and the secodn fan is rite above the blades of the CPU heatsink, and so it is sucking away all the air, and also i have a rear fan that is blowing out of the case. so i don't think the CPU fan is getting any air to blow at the CPU core, any suggestions,

i am planning on doing that window mod, and put a clear window wirth a blowhole...........

i know i will need lot of help on that, i will comne back to u guys for that pretty soon !!!!!!

Thanks
newNovice

hmm., if the fan for the heatsink and the power supply are that close and they are working against each other... that is a bit of a problem... that is creating a dead space of air between them...

If you check them often, you could try a scotch brite pad in front of the intake...

My ghetto filter used to be a piece of nylon stocking/pantyhose, or whatever you call 'em...

A couple of possibilities if your CPU fan is too close to your PSU fan. Here are two similar duct kits that let you duct air in from outside the case to the CPU heatsink.

http://tinyurl.com/v03c
http://tinyurl.com/v03u

Here is a CPU cooler mod that's sold as a way to improve the airflow into the heatsink, by eliminating the dead space at the center of the fan. It does this by moving the fan furhter away from the heatsink. However it also changes the direction the fan points, so you could use it to direct the fan away from the PSU.
