Changing the CPU Fan Is it possible to just change the CPU fan and keep my current heatsink? I would like to use an LED fan. I have the stock Intel heatsink/fan which works great. Robert |
I believe all u have to do is unscrew the fan from the HS and put a different one on. |
dr_roberts49: Absolutely. Simply unscrew the present fan and replace with fan of choice! No need to remove heatsink. I do it often. Brangwen ;) |
Do they make LED fans smaller than 80mm? What I am driving at is that if he wants to use an 80mm fan he may need an adapter? |
I thought the cpu fan was 80mm. That is a good question, Gomer. Robert |
Depends on the heatsink/fan combo. Most stock/standard HSF combos use like a 40-50mm fan. 80mm fans are typically what you see for cases. I am an AMD guy, so maybe there is something they do with pentiums that I don't know about that uses 80mm fans. |
Most cpu fans are 60 mm. An adapter from 80 mm to 60 mm has the advantage of increased airflow over the heatsink, especially the "dead" area of the fan motor. Larger fan is also quieter, less rpm. Plus it looks helacool. |
Thanks for the info. I think I have the spec sheet on my heatsink/fan which came with my P4. I'll look and see if Newegg has any adaptors, just in case. My wallet is on the light side after the holidays, and I'm just trying to cut costs on buying a new heatsink/fan combo. Robert |
Newegg has an adaptor from CoolMax for $9.99 Allows 80mm-90mm fan to be mounted as replacement for smaller cpu fan. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Robert |
you should be able to change it , but if it is a stock hsf it might be a 40-70mm fan on it . if it is an aftermarket hsf it is very possible it is an 80 mm fan . www.svc.com has alot of cheap adapters if you find out it isn't a 80mm fan and you need an adapter . |
