if you get a retail P4 it will come with compound and a heatsink, if it's OEM it will come with neither and you will need to buy your own.
the best stuff to get is hands down Artic Silver . when i switched from a ceramic paste to artic silver 3 my CPU temps dropped a whopping 6 degrees C because of it! newegg has artic silver 5 for $7 |

Thread moved.
The retail cooler comes with a thermal interface pad, a very poor cooling solution IMHO. Remove the pad with a credit card, clean the heatsink surface with alcohol, and then apply a thin layer of thermal paste.
I recommend Arctic Silver 5.
If want a good read on the topic, you can read the cooling chapter of my overclocking book for free. http://www.nostarch.com/overclock_ch5.pdf

If you have no intentions of ever overclocking, then the stock thermal interface pad that comes with the retail cooler will work decently enough.
Just make sure you have a couple of case fans.

Arctic Silver 5 is now what I use in all of my machines vs the compound that comes with some fan\heatsinks due to it gave me a 5-7 degree F cpu heat decrease. I got a 3.5g tube at eWiz.com for $4.50. |
