Can i swap these cpu chips ?
i have a motherboard that says use intel p4 chips. i think its the 478 chipset. well my mom bought this new computer that has a 2.7 ghz celeron chip. i believe thats 478 too so i wanted to know if i could swap em. she doesnt need all that horse power so my 1.8 ghz would be fine for her.
recap - Can a Celeron processor go into a motherboard that says use an Intel P4 chip? and vica versa

if you have p4 inside your computer right now, do not switch it with a celeron.
the celerons are slower

they have less cache too
remember those 1.8 and 2.7 ghz numbers are becoming less true.

yea, but i mean the difference is 1 gig

anyways...
i still hate celerons, i hate to say it... but i think u should take the celeron.

Like GZ said, you'll most likely lose performance switching to the celeron, despite its faster clock speed.

celeron has lower FSB by a lot. i think? im an AMDer myself...

I think Celeron's have a 400MHz front side bus...but then again, his 1.8GHz P4 is probably 400MHz as well. I wouldn't be surprised if their performance was nearly identical despite the MHz... What kind of memory does your 1.8 have? RDRam? I personally would keep the 1.8 and overclock the sucker.

Celerons are designed for the work place, not for preformance

they both have the same FSB, but the celeron has a LOT more MHZ, so unless u no how to OC the p4 take the celeron, u can comapre the two and if u don't like the celeron take it back

Er, think again.

Note the celerons they have clocked to 2.66 and 3.0 ghz are overclocked, with fsbs of 533 and 600 respectively (compared to the 400mhz fsb of your chip). So performance should be about 10-15% lower than what the graphs show.
Given that, I'd oc your P4 and it'll spank that celeron at 2.0ghz or better.

yup u guys were right, u should OC the P4.
this isfor sam:
p4=1.8
celeron=2.7
i cannot belive that atlon 2000- beat the fastest celeron!!!
i didn't no they suck so much... at least for gaming they do

well i would take the celeron if the p4 is a willammate core but keep it if its a northwood but you need to be sure your motherboard will support a chip that high and that it isn't a socket 423 like some of the earlier p4s

yeah, definitely keep that P4. I have a 2.4 celeron in my laptop and a 1.46 athlon in my desktop and my desktop is noticably faster. I can almost feal when the cache is too little.

well i used to have a p4 2.0 desktop and a 2.0 laptop, and the laptop was much slower because it had a different core, prob different FSB, and definitely different RAM

so its not all up to the processor, other stuff make a big difference as well

lol, I can't believe that people would argue that the celey would be faster than the P4
