Will OCing kill my cpu?!?
Hey everyone, I just got a p4 2.8c. I OC it to 3.6 and it is very stable, but i want to know if i keep it at that speed will something happen to my cpu? I bought a new hs/f so cooling's not a problem (side panel off with 4 fans). Will my cpu "die" at that speed after a while?
Thanks

if you run intensive apps and it crashes, knock it down a notch. otherwise, its all good. nope, it wont die

It will in theory shorten the life of your CPU, but not significantly. The important thing is maintain adequate cooling. As long as you keep the CPU under 60C, your CPU should last more than 7 years without any issues.

its a hit and a miss with cpu's
some people have been running overclocked chips for years now with no problems and others would run them for a while and they would burn out.

BTW, nice overclock, over 25% increase is speed is doing well.

What are your processor temperatures? As previously stated, if your temps are too high it will burn out your chip. I might be wrong, but isn't there a program that will stress a cpu for an extended amount of time that is meant for testing overclocks?

At idle my temps are 35C and with full load, 46C.

August 10th, 2004, 02:25 PM #8You are correct, there are burn in programs that will stress test your cpu (meaning it will keep it at 100% work load for a certain amount of time). You can run Prime95 and some people use Sandra's burn in wizard. There are others, but these are what I remember off the top of my head.

I ran the program and my temp was at 52, i guess thats not bad. But, it isnt going to be running under full load constantly. At least i don't think it will.
