    Exclamation Intel Pentium 4 2.8ghz 800mhz Overheating??

    Hi all,

Intel active monitor decided to pop up while I was playing Doom III. It informed me my system was overheating. I saved and exited Doom III immediately to review the log, and this is what it states....

    08/22/04 12:34:38
The system temperature (System Zone 2) has returned to its recommended temperature.

    08/22/04 12:34:37
The system temperature (System Zone 2) has exceeded its recommended maximum temperature.
Bad Temperature Value: 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit)

Look at the times, not even a second has gone by, and it returned to normal values. This leads me to believe maybe there was a glitch, also the bad value statement makes me wonder too...

    Anybody else get this message??

    Thanks

John is correct. I recommend bumping the warning limit up to 60C, as every component in a modern computer can easily survive 50C.

You could always get a better cooling system.
I have an Intel Pentium (R) 3,2GHz processor.

While playing games or doing stuff that requires full CPU load, the temperature of my processor is always near 50C so I don't think you should worry that much to be honest. If it surpasses 60C, then you have a problem.

Not sure John, not sure what to make of it yet..

Since Processor Zone and System Zone 1 were ok, and System Zone 2 was the zone that threw the alarm, I am wondering if maybe the temp/fan sensor glitched, especially since it went back to normal values in 1 second.

    I also know the P4 2.8 800's run hot....

Thanks for the responses all. I will bump up the sensor to go off at 60, not 50. I will also look into a better cooling solution.

Forgot to mention. I have a Thermaltake cooling system.
Both for the CPU and my case, and my temperatures are as mentioned.

Probably because these processors run hot. Still, this cooling system is VERY loud.
It annoys me that I have to have the fans running as fast as possible and the temp. is still high sometimes.

What I am trying to tell you is that, you shouldn't worry.
What cooling solution are you using by the way?

    Hi Dan

Sorry I didnt respond sooner, I was trying to take a picture of the inside of my pc for you to look at, but the camera is such a piece of junk, it's a Vivicam 10 640x480 with a broken flash

Here is what I could get, you can see the stock Intel fan, and over to the left, a standard case fan blowing out the hot air. My case is small too, I don't like big cases. I'm sure this is leading to some of my overheating, I didnt know the P4' 2.8 800's ran this hot, or I would of bought a larger case.

    Any suggestions??

Seriously? I don't think you should mind.
If you still do though, you could always buy a new cooling solution.
Something from Thermaltake or Zalman would be a great deal.

Still, I don't think you should bother.
If your system is running fine, you shouldn't mind about the temp.
A bigger case is not necessary in my opinion. Also, the room temp. is important.

Sorry if I didn't reply to you before. I was busy with girlfriend.
Anyways, I repeat. You shouldn't care that much about the temp.

What temp. does your CPU run when its idling?
If its below 40C you shouldn't mind at all. 50C at load is not that bad.

    Thanks for replying, Dan

I idle about 49-50c and under load about 60c, sometimes a hair over that.

If it surpasses 60C, then I think you should consider a new cooling solution.

    @ XT:
Sorry for the slow response, I was thinking this thread was dead so I havent viewed this for awhile. Anyway, if you're still using the stk. HSF (actually this goes for any HSF), check for dust within the cooling-fins. My heatsink (as well as the fan-blades) had a layer of dust on them and after cleaning, temps took a nose dive. As for your room temps ( high 20'sC=high 70'sF), the way it's been around here lately, they're to die for so I guess that can be ruled out. As far as anything else goes, keep reading....

    @ DanGrease:
In my last post, I gave the temps I was getting with the stk. HSF to give XT a reference to go by until he gets an aftermarket unit. Those have been my normal operating temps (with the weather being hot and all - see my orig. post @ Room Temps) until about a week ago. I've been running a new HSF (Coolmaster Vortex Dream) plus CPUCool (shareware program - Podien Software) with stellar results - as I'm writing this:

    CPU @ 3.1Ghz
coolermaster fan turned DOWN to 3000rpm (max is 4500rpm)
    SETI@home running for the past 4-hrs (95 - 100% load constant)
    37C-case; 46C-cpu; 64.5C*-psu @ 27C (80F)-room

*btw - is this normal for a PSU?

Usually 60 is when things get dangerous, but 50 should be fine. Heck, my ti4200 is usually 50 IDLE.
