| i think imight have killed my cpu, help needed
last night i was buidling my new computer a XP1800 on a soltek SL75DRV4 at first everything worked great but i couldn't raise the FSB over 136mhz
so on adice from a fellow member i removed the ram and tested them one by one to see if one of the sticks was bad, after doing this the computer would ONLY post at 100mhz FSB
i eventually manage to get it working at 133again by using the 120mhz setting on the motheboard
i jumped into bios and saw that the temprature was almost 70c
so i quickly janked the powercord, when i got inside it again
i notices that the heatsink was abit loose but it apeard to make some contact with the core, there was no burning smell and the cpu looked ok,no burn marks or anything.
So i just reattached the hsf but to no avail
the screen is just blank
all the fans are working and the hardrives and cd-rw have power and start buzzing,
Did i burn my proc ? what could it be ? |

Hi Skywalker ..
*Clear the BIOS .. there is a special jumper should do the job on your MoBo .
*check if everything is attached well .. cables, RAM and video card
*check if the CPU is clean .. if there is paste everywhere on the CPU .. then clean it with acetone ..
*Check the CPU protecting legs, if all the four of them are attached ...
** Double check all the above
After all the avove done .. plug the power cable back and fire your PC .. if it didn`t boot .. then sorry, but i think your CPU is dead
BTW.. is the screen Off on save mode .. or nothing at all ... ??

I think the best thing to do is to try a healthy CPU on your MoBo.. or try your CPU on another MoBo ...
So you can be sure if you have a dead board or CPU ...
Is there any kind of peeping from the MoBo upong powering it?.. |

hmm just found this info on soltek's website
SL-75DRV4 BIOS UPDATE FILES
File Name
Descriptions
75DRV-K4.BIN (2002/01/03) To be updated periodically.
< Back >
NOTE: Important with AMD XP processor on board 75DRV4
(1) Please upgrade the BIOS on board up to the latest version (K4).
(2) If the mainboard still has compatible problem with AMD XP processor after upgraded the bios, please contact your local distributor and ask for modification of mainboard circuitry which is needed for AMD XP specification(requested by AMD).
(3) There are slight difference in design and architecture between AMD XP and Athlon CPU. For detailed information on the problem, please contact AMD Technical Support.
this is getting more and more confusing |

Well, i don`t think that the problem is incompatibility ... your CPU worked on that board before the whole heating thing.. right?.. |

well it worked BUT
before it overheated it would only run at 100mhz FSB
if i set it to 133 i got a blank screen just as i do now
and 120FSB would be seen as 133
it's really wierd
the mobo was released just last week
maybe it needs a even never bios or something
im really confused,im acctually thinking of calling soltek and ask if they have had any complaints about this |

Yeah, but given that Soltek have released an even newer BIOS I would contact them as you said and see what they have to say. You will need to reck (oops - edit to check) the CPU on another board though, as it don't sound too good. But if the board caused the CPU to fail through some circuitry probs, then they should replace it. But I doubt they'll admit that unless it's a very well know prob. Check some of the other tech sites to see if anyone has had similar probs with this board.
Good luck. An AMD XP in the herd for UD would be great. Hope you get it goin' soon! | |
