Question
Best Overclocking Combo

Hi, I'm new on this site and i was wondering what everyone thinks is the best motherboard and cpu combo for overclocking and gaming. I am goin to buy a new mobo and cpu and i need some help deciding the best amd or p4 combo. The new 64 bits are very nice but a little out of my price range, I'm swaying towards a Anthlon XP 3000 with a nice board, but I don't know whats good for overclockin and whats not. Let me know what you think, everyones opinions are gonna help, I need as much input as possible for a hot system!!!

the 3000+ wouldnt be a good overclocker, athlon 64s are also pretty poor overclockers, the sempron 3100+ seams to be a good OCer as well as the socket T 2.8 but thats a little more expensive

I currently have a Sempron 3100+ on an Epox 8KDA3+, and so far I've got it up to 2.4Ghz, where 1.8Ghz is the normal speed.
I have the Vortex dream cooler with it, and it keeps it nice and cool, that combo cost me about 250 bucks.

Before that I had an XP3000 on an asus a7n8x. The XP3000 was the 400Mhz fsb version, and without any voltage increase I set it from 2.1Ghz to 2.4Ghz, which was as high as she would go.

No matter what I did and how I did it, it wouldn't do a Mhz over 2.4Ghz without resulting in boot fail.

Amd's have always been better in gaming, so my suggestion to you is, wait till the s939 semprons arrive and buy one of those with a fitting board.

Then you'll be future proof for when ya want another cpu, and you'll have a nice cpu to play with.

Here is a review on the overclockability of the sempron:

If you're looking to overclock with Athlon XP's the 2600+ mobile would be your best bet. You could pair that with one of many mobos like the Abit NF7 amoung many others.

I'd recommend looking into the Sempron 3100+, you would then need a mobo with the Nforce 250GB chipset to get the most out of it. Take your pick over at www.newegg.com .

I've looked into p4's too, whats the best combo for one of those? Also, I can get a Biostar M7NCD and an anthlon xp 3000....is that a good mix or how good are the biostar boards for o.c?

From what I have heard the m7ncd pros are good overclockers and stable boards. I have an m7ncd with the onboard gf4 and it works great. I know nothing about p4's so I will let someone else answer your other question.

Have you done any overclocking with your m7ncd? I know it has something in the bios for it, but i don't know how good it works.

Yes I have done some overclocking with my m7ncd. I got a 1.4 duron up to 1.8 ghz I believe but the power supply was too weak and I had to back it back down. One thing that was kind of odd about my board though was that I had an "unlocked" processor but it would not let me change the multiplier, only the fsb. You shouldnt have that problem with an m7ncd pro though.

Yeah, the thing I like about the biostar boards are the price, but I'm goin for the major gaming so i don't know if I should spend alot of money on a board, or spend less money on the board, and more money on the processor.

As long as the motherboard meets the requirements for the processor(FSB, socket type) and video card (4x/8x), it should work fine. -Generally-, motherboards dont make a huge difference in *real time* gaming, mostly in benchmarking. Just make sure it supports what your putting in it..
