How can I overclock my Sony Vaio?
I am in the process of building a new PC but for the time being I want to make my old Sony a little bit fast. How can I overclock it? I don't know how to find all the specs on it. I want to buy new fans and heatsink as well. I am going to give it to my parents. I want to practice first. Can anyone help me?
Dustin
BTW It is a P4 2.0 ghz

I'm not so sure thats automatically true...
there are several cases where simply flashing the Bios can allow you to overclock through FSB, etc.
Granted its not a clearcut automatic whether he can or cant,... but you cant just say... " No, its a name brand"
what specific model do you have?
you may also have to take the side off and physically identify your motherboard as that will have alot to do with it... your memory will be a limiting factor, and your cooling as well..
If your "practicing" you could possibly pre-buy the memory for your new system and use it for overclocking the VAIO, then switch back when you build...
you will have to do some research on the exact components used in that machine and see what can be done... will be good knowledge for when its for real, too

Just for clarification... If your not able to oveclock, why would you want, or feel the need to upgrade the Stock cooling...
Its one thing if it is overheating, but unless your having problems, I certainly wouldnt risk either the warranty, or the possibility of making a mistake that could cost you the CPU...

The CPU is running really really hot at idle. It overheated the other day. I just wanted to make it run alittle cooler. It is going to be my parents PC. They are going to pay for the parts.

Have you blown the dust out of it lately? A stock PC should never overheat. You may want to look at the current heatsink and fan and make sure it is on tight. Also make sure your airflow is not obstructed.

Yeah I cleaned it out and everything. The heatsink is in there tight. I still would like to just get a little nice one for them. It's not like they cost that much.

man you guys are just answering his questions with more questions! SuperDust22 just find out what kind of slot you have. Older pentium 4s have Slot 478, and I think the newer ones have 775. When you buy cooling the vendor will usually tell you what system a fan and heatsink is for. Even if the size is slightly off the only problem my be the retention system (brackets hold the hole kit and kaboodle together). Also you might want to see what kind of cpu fan connector you have. And overclocking your system is really not a good idea if you're gonna give it to your parents. Overclocking can shorten the life of your system considerably.

and if haven't already if you have ide cables get the rounded one they improve airflow and dont take up as much space as ribbon ide cables.

i have seen overclocked machines that have run for several years. Yes some do die off but with proper cooling and watching the cpu for warning signs that can prevent distaster
plus with chip prices going down so fast, replacing it would be painless
