    is this normal?

just started using my amd64 3000+ and it has an idle temperature of about 60 degrees celcius.

I hvaent really done much with cooling and it still has the standard heatsink and fan.

    is 60 degrees normal?

Normally it should be around 50C
however it all depends on if you have it OC
look into getting a better heat sink and fan

Thermal Pad or Compound? Sometimes reseating the heatsink can work. Also check up on flashing your BIOS as mentioned above. I have heard people with certain motherboards get way too hight temp readings. My Palomino XP1800+ also runs around 60C, so I don't think there's an immidiate danger to the CPU though.

My A64 3200+ runs 48C under load, FaD, so there is a problem, I'd reseat the heat sink and use some good thermal paste. A BIOS update would help also. What mother board are you using?

EDIT:: Mine is OC'ed to 2.4
