Good Morning Everyone !
I just installed a 3.2 Northwood P4 onto an ASUS P4C800E... I was sceptical on using the thermal paste, but did.... It is idling in bios at 117f/48c and I am wondering if that is acceptable. The only reason I am questioning this I have a very distant business friend who say he has the same setup and it runs at 90c with stock cooling. Thanks for your comments.. Have a great Day ! Steve |

Did you use the stock p4 heatsink??
Those already come with thermal pads on them, so you SHOULD NOT use thermal paste in addition to it.
Thats quite warm for a northwood.
My dad has a 2.8ghz northwood with stock cooling heatsink in a pretty large case (5 case fans) and his never goes above 102F on a full load.
Granted your temps are still by all means safe, what is it under a full load? |

well if u put on arctic silver without taking off the thermal pad first, then you need to take of your hsf, take of the thermal paste and pad with some isopropyl alcohol (atleast 70%) and also use it to get it off of your processor, then apply a small amount of AS to your hsf and a little to your cpu and spread it out. You do NOT need a lot. Also do u mean your friends idles at 90F?

I was afraid I did not put enough on... what do you use to spread the as out ? I used a credit card and I could not get a smooth even coating.. it had some ridges in it.. when I installed the cpu I twisted it lightly and slightly to smooth the as down... is there a site I cna go to for instuctions and pictures ? Thanks for all your help... Steve |

Thanks all for your comments and help... I went to the Artic Silver site and followed the directions... I'm still a little warm, but it's down to 112 idling... Is that the 'Nature of the Beast" that it depends on the individual processor how hot it runs ? Or is it the installation process ??? At anyrate this weekend I will be looking at more efficient heat sinks ! Have a Great Day All.... Steve |

Steve | I don't normally go over 112F full load with my Athlon CPU, and they are supposed to run a lot hotter than P4s. I think that's a little hot for a P4, IMO.

I have a P4 3.2 northwood overclocked to 3.6. It runs at 48-50 Deg.C. under full load. The upper 40's seems too high at idle (mine idles at 34-36C). I did read somewhere that your board may read about 5 Deg.C higher than actual though. Do you have Sandra? The cpu burn-in test is a good way to check it under load - which matters more than idle temp. |
