CPU install question!
I just got my OEM Athlon XP1800+ from newegg today I have it sitting in the MB, but It has and orange sticker/price tag on it. This is my first oem CPU should I remove it? or leave it on, its not on the core or anything.
ThanksLast edited by hav0c; February 20th, 2002 at 01:22 PM.

Wow... I've never seen a CPU with one of those on it. I'd say take it off.... heh.

An interesting experiment might be to leave it on and see if it catches on fire.
Seriously it's probably a good idea to remove it. Just try not to scratch or break anything when you do it.

I would say take it off as well. Just try to peel it off and not scrape it cause then you might do some damage.. But I don’t think you should have to worry about it to much.

I dont think it matters. I got my processor and didnt know if I should leave it or remove it, So I just left it on there (thinking I would mess the install up and have to return it or something).
Its been on there for awhile and never caused any problems.
Mine is on the bottom, in the center of the pins.

I left mine there in case I needed to RMA it. I did put the date when the cpu arrived as a record. I think I've also done it on other cpu's I've had. So far they have not burst in flame yet. I think? Let me run home real quick just in case.

thats very strange, i'd say remove the sticker. just don't use any chemicals or you'll be smelling it for some time.

OEM Processors
Usually an OEM Processor has a Price Tag on the processor and I left the price tag on the processor for warranty purposes. A Price Tag identifies warranty information on the OEM Processor and removing the price tag usually voids the warranty. I am uncertain how long the warranty lasts, though. I left my Warranty Tag intact (It's at the bottom of my processor between the pins) and I currently don't have any problems with it whatsoever. Works fine, even with the bothersome "Warranty Sticker" on it.

Is it one of those tags like you find on a mattress, you know the ones that say do not remove this tag or the mattress police will come and haul you a$$ to jail. If it is I say anarchy rules and remove it.
I would take it off just to be on the safe side, just imagine if it ends up frying your PC.
Yes I would like to get this processor replaced.
Why what seems to be the problem
Well the little sticker on it caught fire and burned the PC to a crisp.
Sorry sir we do not replace parts just because you did not remove a piece of paper, knowing that it would be subjected to extreme heat.

You basically have a really tough decision when it comes to this Warranty Sticker. If you choose to take it off, you will "kill" the warranty but it will extend the life of your processor. Whereas leaving it on might kill your processor but will keep the warranty intact. I'm not sure if Processor Frying is covered under the OEM Processor's warranty....

If the sticker was on the TOP of the CPU, where the heat sink goes, I'd say remove it (DUH!!). Any reseller stupid enough to put a sticker on the contact pad where a heat sink goes would not be smart enough to refuse an RMA because you had removed the sticker (IMO - although let it be said that I allow most people are not completely stupid, so I over compensate for those who are
).
But if it on the bottom of the CPU, and not in the way of any contact pins, then it shoul be fine. Unless you overclock your CPU without adequate cooling, or use it with no HSF at all (YIKES! What's that burning smell and that smoke from?!?
), the underside of the CPU (where most mobos measure the CPU temp, BTW) will not get hot enough to cause it to burst into flame.
There! I was serious for all of that post!

Oh gee, what is this my Duron 750/1000 with a sticker between the pins with a date 2/01 written on it. Umm, I wonder if it will still burst in flame. Time to replace the hs paste while I am at it.

I'm reminded of the stickers that I saw on the old Pentiums and 486 chips I've worked with. I dunno what effect it would have on current CPUs today however. These stickers I've seen were about ready to fall off and the glue was sorta burned into the CPU ceramic.

read carefully
You need to read that matress tag closer korgul. It states the tag is only to be removed by the consumer/customer.Originally posted by korgul

I too thought no one could ever remove it, but I looked a little closer.

my two cents worth:
Leave it on for warranty, also if you ever have a problem later you can look at the sticker to see if the cpu has been overheating.
If it is scorched it means the cpu has gotten too hot.
If that sticker burns, who cares? The cpu and mobo are both toast before the sticker burns!
