| Celeron with 1 MB L2 Cache Vs Sempron 2800+
I have to make a choice between 2 Acer laptops-
A Mobile AMD Sempron 2800+ Processor based laptop (Aspire 3002NLC)
or the
Mobile Intel Celeron- M Processor 350 (1.3 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 400 MHz FSB) (Travelmate 2304NLC)
The Celeron laptop costs about $50 more. Most sources on the internet say that the Sempron is a better processor than the Celeron, but this Celeron processor has a 1MB L2 cache as compared to 256 KB L2 cache on the Sempron processor.
Will it perform better than the Sempron because of this? Which laptop should I buy? Main usage is office apps; no major gaming usage.
Also, It looks like both the models I mentioned have 64 MB shared vid memory. Would I be able to add video memory in either of these models? |

both are about the same speed...i would go with the celeron M though because of the better battery life
you need to be sure you are comparing reviews to the celeron M (i doubt there are many though) it is completley different from a regular celeron and a celeron D
you will not be able to add video memory...but for what you do that will be way more than wnough...if you need more system memory you can add more later or decrease the ammount shared with video to 8mb in the bios and still be fine

Thanks- that's interesting. The Celeron M consumes less battery power? I didn't realize that |

In general, Intel Mobile CPU's consume less power, unless you compare a Pentium 4 M (not Pentium M), they don't don't have that great battery life. |

pentium 4 Ms are not very popular anymore...they use less heat and are cheaper than a desktop p4 but also perform worse than an equally rated desktop CPU...most P4 laptops now a days will use a desktop version and a massive heave heatsink without getting more than an hour of better life...thats why atleast dell has switched their high end xps 2 to the pentium M |

I wouldn't say that's anywhere near the same speed. As for cache every benchmark in the last 6 months has said it makes little difference in almost all apps with modern processors.

I agree. The sempron should be faster.
As far as the Pentium 4m, I don't even know if they still produce those. Most latptops i've seen are either using a desktop P4, or a Pentium M, many times labeled as Centrino if its using an intel wireless network card and the right chipset.

Hey, I concentrate soley on the desktop, I just know a few things about the mobile world. How about a Turion? How do those stack up?

If you're not gaming and all you do is word processing and Web surfing, then either laptop will perform adequately. The biggest difference will be in run times. The celeron M consumes much less power. We have a couple of centrino laptops that run for up to four hours! I'll be lucky to get one hour out of my Pentium 4-M powered laptop. |
