| AMD cores, what's the difference?
Hi all,
I'm not too sure about which cores go with which socket types but if anyone can give me a list from better to worse that would be some help for me. Also does it reall matter which core you get?
I think socket A has: Palamino, Thoroughbred A & B, Thornton, Barton cores
Socket 754 I'm not sure of?
For socket 939 I've seen: San Diego, Winchester and Venice
I'm not sure what the difference is between all the cores, but knowing why I might decide to get one over the other would be benficial when I decide to upgrade or build a new comp, hope someone can help, thanks! |

For Socket A-Duron, Athlon, Athlon XP-Socket A is becoming obsolete, so don't worry about it
Socket 754-Sempron (Paris and ?) and Athlon 64 (Clawhammer)-becoming budget line [Semprons], so also don't worry too much about it
Socket 939-1st-San Diego-Athlon 64 FX-Raw Power, but expensive
2nd-Venice-very good @ OC'ing, better at games than Winchester
3rd-Winchester-before Venice, doesn't include SSE3 instruction set
I'd go w/ a Venice, and then overclock to a FX-55 |

Venice is the best core from what I have heard.

Toledo and manchester look promising. And the s939 FX series runs on clawhammer...so I wouldn't say venice is the best. And of course San Diego...mmmm...San Diego.

Venice is the best Athlon64 core if you're not including the FX processors. So unless you're purchasing the FX, Venice core is the way to go.
EDIT: I should also add, non-dual core... Venice is the best SINGLE core NON FX core.
