    Question memory question

    planning from upgrading from 512MB.

I was just wondering should i get a 1GB of ram 1 stick or 1GB of ram (512x2)?

    or does it even matter?

    please respond.

the optimal amount is 1GB, you really don't need more.... unless you do RAM intensive work?

I recommend adding another 512MB stick.

    What motherboard to you have?

What is your current RAM configuration? 1 x 512mb or 2 x 256mb? If your board supports dual channel memory, then 2 x 512 dual channel sticks would be optimal...it not, then do whatever is cheaper to get you to 1GB.

    currently i have a kingston 512mb ddr400 pc3200 184pin

    in the introduction says
    "supports 3 DIMM DDR 200/266/333 (Max 3GB)"
    "supports 2 DIMM DDR 400 (Max 2GB)"

is it possible for me to add one of these?

Well, I would stay with the Kingston, but your motherboard supports 2x memory module's of DDR400. I have a hunch that your RAM is the ValueRAM [the stuff in your system now], so this might be the same stuff-

You don't need more than 1GB, yet.

If you buy one additional 512mb piece you need the exact same ram that you currently have for it to function in "dual channel" mode. Dual channel mode is a little faster than single channel.

well you can only put in 2 sticks(dimms) total, so ya you can put it 2 512mb sticks and ditch the ram you have now, or just add 1 sitck for 1 gb total
or to get the max 2gb( don't bother with 2 gigs ) two 1 gb dimms
you only have 2 slots for ram, so that is why

I know some gamers that have 2gigs and they can tell the diff between 1 and 2 gigs of ram

    yep

    OK, here are two facts:

AXP CPUs do not benefit much from dual channel
The RAM sticks do not have to be identical in order to run dual channel, for example, I have a 512MB Geil and 512MB PQI PC3200 sticks that can run dual channel any day, but since my rig is only a FAD cruncher, there's no benefit of having 1GB in there, it was only for experimenting
