The Sempron is the Celeron of AMD, it's a budget cpu.
A sempron 2600 would be equivalent or faster then the celron 2.6Ghz.
What you should do is get a sempron 3100+ socket 754 and some good ram.
Then overclock the hell out of it, they are very good performers, as long as you just get the s754 version, not the socket A versions.

I thought the semprons were regular athlon xps (which are not celeron equivalents). |

The socket A semprons are actually Barton cores with half the cache.
They are truelly budget cpu's, as they will never be better then the Bartons.
The Socket 754 semprons is a whole different thing, they are A64's without 64bit support and less cache, but they perform really good. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...ron-3100e.html
Have a look at this review and see the power of s754 semprons. |

didn't we have a question like this before??
Semprons are supposed to take the place of Durons which is AMDs budget CPU line. AMD has always been the hands down winner when it comes to a budget PC, and this has definitely happened again with the battle between the Sempron and the Celeron D.
2600+ Sempron would be equivalent to a 2.4GHz P4, but not "C" because a "C" would smoke it. FYI, "C"=800MHz FSB

A=4x100MHz FSB=400MHz FSB
B=4x133MHz FSB=533MHz FSB
C=4x200MHz FSB=800MHz FSB
I wouldn't compare semprons to P4s because they're made to compete with the celerons, specifically the celeron Ds. The cache on P4s is 512k or 1mb while it's only 256k on semrpons. |

The FSB on all semprons is the same and it is 333MHz or 2x166MHz. AMDs competitor with the P4 is the AMD64 which is currently whipping it all over the place. The FSB on the AMD 64s is also 200MHz real clock speed, but it can range from 800MHz-2GHz HT. |
