minimum 1gb RAM ?
Hi,
I've got a friend who wants to build a new a64 rig... He said he heard some people mention before that he'll need at least 1gb of RAM to run smoothly.. is this true?? He said he heard that a64 with 512mb RAM causes it to lag??
I've never heard of it so i thought I should just post the question here...

Yep, 512 MB of RAM just isn't cutting it anymore.

It depends on what he's gonna be doing with it.
If he's gonna do some major video-editing and photoshopping, then yes, get AT LEAST 1Gb of ram.
If he's gonna do some good gaming, I'd suggest 1Gb, no less no more.
If it's gonna be used for just surfing and emailing and all that, just get a stick of 512Mb.2 x Opteron 4280 2.8Ghz, Asus KCMA-D8, 32GB DDR3 1600, Asus 6950 DCII 1GB 2 x M4 64GB SATA600, Caviar Black 640GB, Seagate 1TB, 27"syncmaster

It makes sense to get a gig of ram anyway with a dual core cpu. I don't know, but I believe each core has access to ram essentially giving each core 512. I'm only guessing though. I personally would buy no less then 2 gig

will 512 on A64 be better than 512 on Athlon XP is the question i should be asking...

July 11th, 2005, 11:17 AM #10Well 512Mb should be a minimum, but if your gonna play games, and multimedia type of stuff, 1GB is the way to go

Number 1,000!! Yay!!!!
But, if he is going with an Athlon 64, he may as well go with 1GB, because you can find a gig for $70 (USD).

Thanks all... I think I'll just take your advice and go for 1gb of RAM

now I just need to confirm if this is true: "512mb on an A64 machine will be slow. Needs at least 1gb"
512mb on my Athlon XP seems fine though i plan to upgrade soon..

July 11th, 2005, 11:29 AM #14It's not that 512mb will be slow, its just that it will hold your computer back, especially on newer games. So why have a nice cpu, when the ram is holding it back?

Thanks Solo. And, to think I did it all on a 21.6 kbps connection.
And, you took the words out my mouth, Solo.

July 11th, 2005, 11:33 AM #17well thats what I meant, since an a64 is a gaming cpu
