About XEON processor !!!
HI, I am a member of a non-tech forum
and my friend who is also the admin of the forum wants to know something about xeon processors so I thought to put his question here, as TECHImo has the best people
-----------------------------------------------------------
we have this HP Proliant ML570G2 server with one Xeon MP processor installed. The server is 4 processor capable.
We want to upgrade this server to dual processor. Now, a processor upgrade kit from HP costs a hell lot of money. Even from third party sources, Intel Xeon MP processors are very expensive.
Xeon processors, however, are very affordable.
Now, can someone tell me whether it is possible to can install two numbers of Xeon processors (not Xeon MP) in this server?
The server is based on the ServerWorks Grand Champion HE (GC-HE) chipset which is supposed to be compatible with both Xeon and Xeon MP. Moreover, both processors fit on the same type of socket called Socket 603.
Also, if it is possible to install the Xeon processor, where can one buy the VRM (voltage regulator module)? Since our server came with only one processor, it has only one VRM installed. We shall need another VRM for the second processor.
p.s. we understand that we may have to buy 2 processors and discard the existing one.
-----------------------------------------
Thanks

What you could do is the following.
Ask your friend if he would ever want to upgrade from 2 to 4 cpu's on that server.
If the answer is no, then you can just as well get 2 Xeon DP's instead of MP, as they tend to be quite a bit cheaper if I remember correctly.2 x Opteron 4280 2.8Ghz, Asus KCMA-D8, 32GB DDR3 1600, Asus 6950 DCII 1GB 2 x M4 64GB SATA600, Caviar Black 640GB, Seagate 1TB, 27"syncmaster

I would argue that I'd rather have a more competitive corporate tax rate in exchange for a more progressive personal income tax with many more brackets to more evenly spread the onus. Businesses do...
